Since the dried cherries here are complemented by very fresh sage and citrus, you would never guess this wine has 15% alcohol. Meanwhile, the tannins are very tense and quite powerful for this price point and the acidity is mineral and mouthwatering. Drink from 221.
With a name like that, it can only be a Maremma wine. Poggio Argentiera's Capatosta, Toscana Rosso IGT, comes from an interesting blend of Sangiovese, 90%, and Alicante for the remainder. The grapes come from the southern part of the Maremma, in the Baccinello area, in the province of Grosseto, where the soil is rich in alluvial pebbles. A certified organic wine, the production of Capatosta begins with hand-picking the grapes when they are perfectly ripe. In the winery, the maceration process lasts about two weeks, with fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. After racking, the wine is transferred to medium-capacity oak casks, where it rests for no less than 13 months. Bright ruby red, this Tuscan red has intense and pleasant aromas reminiscent of dark fruit and undergrowth. In the mouth, however, it reveals a nice body and an intense taste. A mature wine of great elegance.
Poggio Argentiera was established in 1997. The starting point was the Adua farm, dating back to the early 1900s, the time of the Maremma land reclamation. The original 6 hectares were used to produce Morellino di Scansano and only later was the new wine cellar built. Then, in 2001, the property was expanded thanks to the purchase of another farm, Keeling, located in the hilly area, in the municipality of Scansano. Today the company can count on a total of 20 hectares of productive land included in the Morellino DOCG. The vineyards of Podere Adua are located at sea level, a few kilometres from the Tyrrhenian coast. The situation is quite different for the Keeling estate, which is at a higher altitude, in the hills. Since 2009, the entire estate has been run according to the dictates of organic farming, with the aim of seeking a balance between the plant and the surrounding environment.
