The Soave Classico Roccolo del Durlo takes its name from an iconic hill located in Brognoligo, in the municipality of Monteforte d’Alpone. Here the soil is deep black, composed almost entirely of basalt and volcanic tuff. The term “Roccolo” refers to ancient structures used by hunters to catch birds, often positioned in the most scenic and breezy spots. The Soave Classico DOC represents the historic heart of the denomination. Only grapes grown in the original hillside areas, where drainage is perfect and sun exposure is constant, can bear this title. The protagonist is Garganega, 100%. This native grape variety is the true interpreter of the volcano: its roots sink into basalt, extracting the mineral salts that give the wine its typical vertical structure. In this specific cru, Garganega sheds any aromatic shyness to become dense, almost textural, while maintaining that vibrant elegance that makes it unique among Italian white wines. The production process is designed to respect the old vines, which are around 70 years old. The grapes are harvested by hand, late in the season, around mid-October, when they are rich in extract and sugars. After fermentation in steel, the wine rests on its lees for a long period, about 8-10 months, with frequent bâtonnage. This step is essential to give Roccolo del Durlo that richness and volume that balance its pronounced volcanic acidity. Already enjoyable today, this Veneto white has great ageing potential. If properly stored, it can rest in the cellar for 10-15 years, developing tertiary notes of chestnut honey and resins that make it almost regal. It is proof that great white wines do not fear time, they use it to become even more complex.
In the heart of Soave Classico, where the hills grow steep and the land tells a thousand-year-old story of volcanoes and lava, stands Azienda Agricola Le Battistelle. We are in Brognoligo, a small hamlet of Monteforte d’Alpone. The story of Le Battistelle is one of a bold choice. Until 2002, the Dal Bosco family – led by Gelmino and Cristina, today together with their children Andrea and Gloria – delivered their grapes to the local cooperative winery, like many other producers in the area. Then came the turning point: the awareness of holding a unique heritage and the desire to tell its story first-hand. This is how the winery was born, named after the hill of the same name, a place where the vines sink their roots into a black, basaltic and generous soil. Here there are no modern tractors or automated machinery. Here “Heroic Viticulture” is practised, officially certified by CERVIM. The vineyards are spread across such steep slopes that every operation, from pruning to harvest, must be carried out strictly by hand. The production philosophy of the Dal Bosco family is simple yet rigorous: wine is made in the vineyard. The only protagonist is the native grape variety par excellence, Garganega, vinified in purity to let the different nuances of each vineyard emerge. Thanks to the richness of micro-elements and the basaltic nature of the soil, Le Battistelle wines stand out for their vibrant minerality and elegant structure.
