We are in the heart of Lugana, on the southern shores of Lake Garda, in the San Benedetto di Lugana area. Here, there is a truly special microclimate: the lake mitigates temperature variations and promotes beneficial night-time ventilation that controls humidity. All these elements help to preserve the freshness and aromas of the wines. The soils are clayey-calcareous, well-drained but rich, with the presence of silt, which gives structure to the wine. Ottella, for its part, is a winery with a long family history that has made the local grape variety, Turbiana (or Trebbiano di Lugana), the focus of its project. The grapes are harvested by hand towards the end of September. Only the ripest and healthiest ones end up in 17 kg crates to be quickly transported to the winery. Here, the whole bunch is gently pressed, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled steel tanks. The wine remains in steel for ageing, with about 5 months of contact with the fine lees, to enrich its body and complexity without losing its freshness. The result is spectacular from the moment it is poured into the glass. It has a bright, clear straw colour with greenish reflections. On the nose, there are mineral aromas, notes of cedar, lemon, delicate citrus fruits and an exotic touch reminiscent of tropical fruits such as pineapple or mango. On the palate, it is immediately lively and balanced. The finish is clean, with a nice persistence that invites you to have another glass. Designed to be drunk young, this Lugana is in no hurry to be uncorked. It can evolve well for 3-5 years, provided it is stored in the right conditions. Over the months, more intense nuances of light dried fruit, a hint of honey and greater roundness will emerge. Perfect with fish dishes, such as trout fillet with butter and sage or seafood risotto, it is also excellent with summer salads, grilled vegetables and fresh cheeses. It is enjoyable with a good roast chicken, especially when served with a side dish of baked potatoes.
