    L.A. Cetto Zinfandel 2020
  • Among the New World's most beloved grape varieties is Zinfandel. A generous and versatile red berry grape, capable of producing very interesting wines, both red and in a rosé version that is extremely fashionable in California's trendy locales. Zinfandel is a close relative of our Primitivo grape, and like the Apulian varietal, its American cousin also lends itself to aging in wood. The version proposed here by L.A. Cetto, for example, matures for about 6 months in French barriques before being bottled and put on the market. A deep, impenetrable red, this Mexican Zinfandel has aromas of well-ripened red and dark fruits, with light spicy notes. In the mouth the pleasant fruity sensations perceived earlier return, with nice tannins in evidence but pleasantly ripe.

Mexican by fact, Italian by distant origin. The L.A. Cetto Winery, in fact, was founded in 1928 thanks to Angelo Cetto from Trentino. Originally from Selva di Levico, Trento, he moved to Mexico with his family in the mid-1920s. Here he acquires a winery in Tijuana, a stone's throw from the border. It is the Prohibition era, and thanks to this fortunate location, the Cetto family's business gets off on the right foot. With the arrival of Luis Augustin, Angelo's son, the winery expanded considerably, acquiring new vineyards and beginning to cultivate different grape varieties, mainly Italian, such as Nebbiolo, Montepulciano and Barbera, joined by Zinfandel, a relative of the Apulian Primitivo. Success was not long in coming, and within a few years the company began to expand its business, exporting its wines even to California.
