This time we are in the Colchagua Valley in the heart of Chile. We are about 40 km from Santa Cruz, in an area that is considered the South American home of Carménère. More generally, however, the Colchagua Valley is one of the most important viticultural areas in Chile, where mainly red wines are produced. Chilean viticulture is strongly influenced by French viticulture. In addition to Carménère, in fact, there are large plots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in these parts. Vines, in fact, were imported to Chile-mostly around the 19th century by French settlers themselves. Carménère is reminiscent in many ways of Merlot. A late maturing variety, it needs sunshine to perform at its best. Conditions found right in the Colchagua Valley. A fine red, it is characterized by intense color. Definitely fruity, it also has a slight herbaceous note that may suggest Cabernet Sauvignon. Good right out of the box, this Chilean red is also suitable for aging.
