Goleta is a blend that brings together the vibrant character of Marselan with the smooth, reassuring nature of Merlot, creating a bridge between the European old world and the energy of South America. We are in Colonia del Sacramento, home to Bodega Los Cerros de San Juan. Founded in 1854 by the Lahusen family, it is the oldest winery in Uruguay, and its stone buildings have been declared a National Historic Monument. This red does not follow rigid rules and fits within a philosophy that enhances the free expression of the Colonia terroir. You don’t need to be an expert to understand that this is an ambitious project. The decision to combine Marselan, a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, with Merlot is a smart move for those looking for a full-bodied yet highly drinkable wine. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented separately in stainless steel tanks and concrete tulip-shaped vessels, modern containers that preserve the integrity of the fruit. The final ageing of 6 months in French oak barriques adds the finishing touch, giving the wine a complexity that never becomes tiring. In the glass, Goleta stands out with its deep, almost impenetrable ruby colour. On the nose, ripe black fruit dominates, with blackberry and plum, followed by a trail of sweet spices and a light hint of tobacco. On the palate, it is full, enveloping and beautifully balanced. The tannins are present but gentle, while the finish remains long and clean, leaving a pleasant memory of forest berries and black pepper.
