  • In August, the grapes begin to ripen and their skins gradually take on a darker colour: this is the veraison phase. Vaio is in fact an ancient adjective meaning "stained or spattered with black or dark spots". And that's exactly how the 2016 Vaio from Villa Poggio Salvi looks: dark to the eye, scented with overripe fruit and small black fruits (blackberry). A young, dry and full-bodied mouthfeel is the icing on the cake!

    Morellino di Scansano is the delicious interpretation of Sangiovese that is made in Scansano, in the province of Grosseto, and some of the surrounding municipalities. It has been one of the 11 DOCGs of Tuscany since 2007. Vaio is born in the vineyards of Morellino di Scansano and is aged in the cellars of Montalcino near the Brunello barrels of Villa Poggio Salvi. Vinified in steel and aged in the bottle, to bring out its younger, fresher side. Light-hearted and super-pleasant: hoarding is a must! Pierluigi Tagliabue was one of the pioneers who decided to focus on the Montalcino territory when it was not yet so fashionable. Over the years, he has transformed Villa Poggio Salvi into one of the most solid realities in the area: 21 hectares of vineyards cultivated with Sangiovese Grosso, used to produce Rosso di Montalcino DOC, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Annata, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Cru Pomona, Rosso di Montalcino DOC and an interesting spumante brut rose’. Since 1998 the farm has been enriched with a new estate in the land of Chianti, ''Casavecchia'', where Chianti Colli Senesi and Tosco and Lavischio, IGT based on Sangiovese and Merlot, are produced. To complete the range, in addition to Vaio, the white wines Vermentino and Moscadell' di Montalcino DOC (a rare historical gem of the area), and two grappas. In 2007 Pierluigi handed control over to his nephew, oenologist Luca Belingardi, who is now at the helm of the company. Approximately 250,000 bottles are produced each year.
