Conte Tasca d'Almerita, Tenuta Regaleali, Sclafani Bagni (PA) Italia
A great classic. A timeless wine. Rosso del Conte by Tasca d'Almerita is a fundamental chapter in Sicilian winemaking. A wine that paved the way for the island's great reds and continues to be a benchmark. A true icon. It all began in 1970, when Count Giuseppe Tasca d'Almerita, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux, decided to create a great ageing wine capable of competing with the world's most prestigious reds. But the stroke of genius was the use of Nero d'Avola and Perricone. A bold blend for the time, it demonstrated to the world Sicily's potential for high-quality wines. The estate is located at an altitude of about 500 metres above sea level, which is fundamental to the quality of the grapes. The significant temperature difference between day and night allows the grapes to ripen slowly, developing intense aromas and a lively acidity that balances the structure. The vines, trained as bush vines or espaliers, sink their roots into clayey and calcareous soil, which gives the wine a remarkable minerality. After manual harvesting, the grapes are fermented in steel tanks. The wine is then aged for about 18 months in Slavonian oak barrels and partly in French oak barriques. This long period in wood gives the wine its complexity, smoothness and ageing potential. It has an intense, deep ruby red colour and a riot of aromas on the nose. It starts with notes of cherry and morello cherry, then opens up to hints of sweet spices, cocoa and tobacco, which blend with balsamic and aromatic herb nuances. On the palate, however, it reveals itself to be a wine of great structure, with dense, velvety tannins that caress the palate and a vibrant freshness that leads to a long and persistent finish. This is certainly not an everyday wine, but a label to be uncorked on a special occasion. A red with great ageing potential, over time its aromas will become more complex and its taste softer and more harmonious. A real treasure to be treasured.
Eight generations. Over 200 years of wine history in Sicily. What more could you want? Perhaps only ownership of one of the island's most famous estates, Regaleali, where many of the company's best-known wines come from. We are, of course, talking about Tasca d'Almerita, rightly considered one of the most interesting wineries in our country. The challenge of the 2000s for the last heirs of the dynasty is that of environmental sustainability on the company's vast estates. Estates that are located in practically every corner of Sicily. Alongside the historic Regaleali estate in Sclafani, Palermo, Tasca now also works vineyards in Salina, the land of Malvasia, on the island of Mothia, where Marsala was born and where small plots of Grillo grapes are still found today, in Camporeale and even on the northern slope of Etna, where native vines dominate and are cultivated at high altitudes on fascinating terraced vineyards.
