Between wind and tradition: introducing Contesa dei Venti. A Nero d'Avola that perfectly represents the beauty of south-eastern Sicily, kissed by constant breezes that are a lifeline for the countryside. This is reflected in the name and the beautiful label, which depicts a female figure dancing in the wind. The vineyards grow on sandy, calcareous soils, kissed by warm sunshine for several months of the year, where the heat is mitigated by sea breezes that soften the summer heat and help the vines maintain their freshness and aroma. Vittoria DOC, this red wine from Donnafugata is 100% Nero d'Avola, capable of enhancing the characteristics of the variety. The grapes are harvested manually in September, ensuring that they are picked at the optimum moment of ripeness. Fermentation takes place in steel vats and maceration lasts for 10 days at a controlled temperature in order to extract colour and tannins. After malolactic fermentation, the wine rests for 8 months in steel vats, preserving its freshness and fruitiness, and then for at least another 7 months in the bottle before being released for sale. The result is a red wine with an intense ruby colour and a floral nose with hints of lavender, violet, cherry and plum. The palate is soft and harmonious, with velvety tannins, good acidity and a slightly balsamic and persistent finish. Despite being a red wine, it is surprisingly versatile in terms of food pairings: cold cuts, grilled meats, flavourful fish dishes or even tuna sushi. In short, Contesa dei Venti is a sincere and contemporary Nero d'Avola. Elegant, balanced and pleasant to drink. It is an excellent ambassador for eastern Sicily: fresh, enveloping and capable of surprising.
There are wineries that every wine lover thinks they know everything about. Simply because they have always represented the world of Italian wine. Among these, Donnafugata undoubtedly occupies a special place. A winery that for many is synonymous with Sicily and quality wine. A historic brand owned by the Rallo family, Donnafugata produces wines in different areas of Sicily. From east to west, from Trapani to Etna, there is no area in Sicily suitable for wine production where Donnafugata does not own a vineyard. What few people know, however, is that the name Donnafugata comes from Gabriella Rallo, wife of the founder and mother of the two enterprising current managers of the company. Gabriella Anca Rallo, a courageous woman with a penchant for innovation, was a pioneer of quality viticulture in Sicily. She is the real “donnafugata” (woman on the run) who left her teaching job to devote herself full-time to the vineyards of Contessa Entellina. She was one of the first women in Sicily to produce wine in a sector typically dominated by men. A true pioneer of quality viticulture for women. All that remains is to say thank you to Gabriella. For being so courageous and for inspiring all this. Cheers!
