Among the rows of Montalcino. Late summer afternoon. It is from here, from this magnificent corner of Tuscany, that Rosso di Montalcino Ciampoleto by Tenuta San Giorgio is born. A wine that focuses entirely on freshness and immediate drinkability. We are on the south-east slope of the Montalcino hill, in an area where the vineyards benefit from enviable sun exposure and constant ventilation that keeps the grapes healthy and concentrated. An interesting anecdote concerns the name “Ciampoleto”, which seems to refer to ancient local land names, a testament to how every single plot in this municipality has its own identity rooted in centuries of history. The Rosso di Montalcino DOC designation is often, unfairly, considered the “younger sibling” of Brunello. In reality, it is a precise and bold stylistic choice. It represents the youthful and dynamic face of the territory, designed for those who do not want to wait years before opening an important bottle. In this case we are talking about 100% Sangiovese. In Ciampoleto, Sangiovese expresses its most radiant and immediate side, offering a sip that goes straight to the heart of the fruit. Fermentation takes place in concrete vats. A choice that allows for natural and consistent temperature control, with short macerations that extract only the softest tannins. The wine then ages for 10 months between Slavonian oak casks and concrete. This balance between large wood and inert materials allows the wine to mature without being overwhelmed by toasted notes, preserving the crispness that makes it unique. Intense and bright ruby red, on the nose it recalls ripe berries, cherry and small red fruits, with a finish that hints at autumn flowers and violet. On the palate it is smooth, although freshness is the true protagonist. The tannins do not bite but gently caress the palate, the body is moderate, very easy to drink and never tiring.
In the heart of one of the most iconic wine territories in the world, where Sangiovese reaches its highest expression, stands Tenuta San Giorgio. We are in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, on the south-east slope of the Montalcino area. Here the vineyards climb the steep hills at around 400 metres above sea level, overlooking the Val d’Orcia like a natural terrace and facing directly towards the peaks of Mount Amiata. Founded in 1982, the estate experienced a key turning point in 2016 when it became part of the ColleMassari group led by Claudio Tipa. This acquisition was not simply a change of ownership, but the meeting of a historic estate with a production philosophy centred on elegance and sustainability. Today Tenuta San Giorgio is a winery that has chosen the path of organic certification (officially obtained in 2019), driven by the belief that a great Brunello cannot exist without the health of the land that produces it. What makes the estate’s wines special is the extraordinary variety of its soils. Of the 142 hectares of the property, only 28 are dedicated to vineyards, while the rest is woodland and olive groves: a biodiversity haven that protects the vines and regulates the microclimate. In the cellar, the guiding principle is to avoid modern intervention and return to the purest tradition. For this reason, fermentations take place slowly in concrete vats and ageing continues for years in large Slavonian oak casks. An approach that requires patience but allows the wood to accompany the wine without ever overpowering it, preserving the characteristic aromas of sour cherry, tobacco and spice typical of Sangiovese.
