    • Quinta de São Sebastião – Estrada Nacional 9, Arruda dos Vinhos, Lisboa, Portugal

"Janela Branca" Vinho Regional Lisboa Tinto 2023
    • We are in Arruda dos Vinhos, where the military history of the “Lines of Torres” intertwines with a winemaking tradition dating back more than a thousand years. Here stands Quinta de São Sebastião, officially founded in 1755 — the very same year as the devastating Lisbon earthquake. The climate here is a perfect balancing act: protected by the mountains yet constantly refreshed by Atlantic breezes that keep the grapes fresh and vibrant. The clay-limestone soils do the rest, giving the wines the mineral structure that is the unmistakable signature of this region north of the capital. Janela Branca Special Selection perfectly represents the spirit of the region, capable of combining the elegance of native grape varieties with international strength, delivering an authenticity that stands proudly alongside far more celebrated wine regions. The blend combines Syrah, Castelão and Tinta Roriz. Syrah brings the spicy and deep character we love so much, while Castelão contributes lively acidity and aromas of red berries. Tinta Roriz, known in Spain as Tempranillo, completes the wine with elegance and a silky tannic texture that makes every sip wonderfully enveloping. In the winery, everything begins with temperature-controlled fermentation and long maceration, allowing every nuance to be extracted from the grape skins. Only part of the wine is then aged for six months in French oak barrels — a careful choice intended not to overpower the fruit, but to enhance it with elegant toasted and spicy notes. Deep and intense garnet colour inviting immediate tasting. On the nose, ripe forest berries such as blackberries and blueberries are beautifully integrated with delicate hints of black pepper and a touch of vanilla from the oak ageing. On the palate, this is a wine that leaves a lasting impression: powerful and full-bodied on entry, yet the real surprise lies in the finish, which remains fresh, clean and incredibly elegant. A perfect match with grilled beef steak and rosemary — the freshness of the wine beautifully cuts through the richness of the meat.

We are just 30 minutes from Lisbon, in the heart of the historic Arruda dos Vinhos region. Here stands Quinta de São Sebastião, a fragment of Portuguese history that has successfully reinvented itself with a modern spirit and a cosmopolitan vision. Founded in 1755 — the very same year in which the devastating Lisbon earthquake changed the face of the country forever — the estate rises in a place steeped in legend. Within the walls of its 18th-century manor house and ancient chapel, one can still feel the legacy of centuries of pilgrimages and rural traditions. Yet it was with the arrival of entrepreneur António Parente that the Quinta entered a new era. Driven by a profound connection to this land, Parente transformed the property into an ambitious project capable of bringing together historic architecture and the most advanced winemaking technologies. Under the guidance of winemaker Filipe Sevinate Pinto, the winery follows an approach that enhances native grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Arinto and Sousão, while also embracing international varieties including Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The goal is to create wines that act as “bridges” between Portugal and the rest of the world. One of the winery’s most distinctive qualities is its ability to be authoritative without ever becoming dull.
