Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits en Montavot 2022
    • Have you ever wondered where the true heart of Burgundy lies? It is not always in the grandiose names of the Grand Crus, but often on the highest slopes, those overlooking the famous valleys, where the air is cooler and Pinot Noir develops an agile and pungent character. This Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits en Montavot by Pierre André is a perfect example. An elegant red that offers the “feel” of the Côte de Nuits, with a lightness and immediate drinkability that make it irresistible. It is an authentic calling card for those who want to drink Burgundy well without being intimidated by overly complicated labels. We are in the Côte-d'Or department. Here, the vineyards are located on limestone plateaus and slopes with altitudes ranging from 300 to 400 metres above sea level. Average temperatures are cooler than in other areas, resulting in a longer ripening period, which is essential for Pinot Noir to develop fresher aromas, vibrant acidity and fine tannins. The vinification process is designed to enhance the freshness of the grapes. It begins with cold pre-fermentation maceration for several days before fermentation begins. Fermentation then takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with frequent pigeage and pumping over to ensure optimal extraction. Finally, ageing takes place for 8-12 months, partly in barrels (30%) and partly in tanks (70%). The limited use of new barrels (only 25%) ensures that the wood does not overpower the fruit, but rather supports it, adding a touch of complexity. The right balance between tradition and modernity to obtain a juicy but not banal wine. In the glass, the wine has a beautiful bright ruby red colour, clear and luminous, which immediately invites tasting. The nose reveals fresh red fruit, such as cherry and redcurrant, with a distinctive floral note of violet. All this is enveloped in subtle hints of undergrowth, such as damp leaves and mushrooms, an elegant reminder of its origins. The palate is exactly as one would wish: fresh, juicy and elegant. The acidity is perfectly integrated, the tannins are fine and the body is slender.

The history of Maison Pierre André began in 1923. A few years later, in 1927, the founder acquired a château in Aloxe-Corton, officially beginning the production of wines that express the great terroirs and grape varieties that symbolise Burgundy, namely Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Pierre André wines are produced in one of the most celebrated areas in the world: Burgundy, a mosaic of vineyards stretching along hillsides and valleys with a continental climate, where different exposures and unique soils – mainly composed of marl rich in limestone and clay – play a crucial role. Here, the concept of Climat, or a small, well-defined plot of vineyard, is literally sacred. For the rest, the attention to detail is simply obsessive: from the care taken with the old vines, which guarantee more concentrated and complex grapes, to the winemaking techniques, which, while remaining traditional, make use of modern equipment to ensure maximum purity.
