We fly to the heart of Australia, land of great wines. And we do so to discover this Atlas Son of Titan Syrah, produced by Penley Estate. We find ourselves in the Coonawarra region. A structured, full-bodied red, this wine comes from a pure processing of Syrah grapes, or Shiraz, as they say in Australia. Deep red is its color, the nose has very clear hints of ripe black and red fruits, such as blackberries, plums, raspberries and blueberries, flanked by fresh spices such as black pepper, cinnamon and star anise. A delicate nuance of toasted wood, due to the barrel passage, is also clearly discernible, adding an additional level of complexity. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied, with considerable length and intensity. The tannins are fine and contribute a nice character to the wine. The finish is fresh, lively and bright. Good already, this Syrah has good aging potential. Well stored, Atlas Son of Titan Syrah can safely continue its evolutionary path for the next 10 years. On the table it requires pairing with meats, cured meats and cheeses.
The history of the Penley Estate winery dates back to 1844, although the real beginning of the business did not occur until 1945 when Reginald Lester Tolley, riding in his red sports car, met Judith Anne Penfold Hyland. The marriage of the two led to the birth of the Penley brand in 1947. Then in 1988, Reginald and Judith's children decided to create their own wines, starting the Penley Estate winery in Coonawarra, and in 1995 the winery was built. In 2015, brother Kym retired, leaving the sisters with the decision to sell or revamp the brand. The women had no hesitation, and through meeting with Hans, a winemaker and geologist, they initiated extensive vineyard mapping and created a process to produce unique wines. Today Penley Estate produces classic Coonawarra wines. A story characterized by passion and vision, with a hint of scandal and madness.
