Trentangeli is not just a label, but a direct tribute to the rural tradition of Puglia: the area of the same name on the Bocca di Lupo estate was once a resting place along the transhumance routes, and it is said that the shepherds' paths were protected by thirty angels. This is the idea behind this wine: a warm embrace, but also a safe guide through a unique territory. This DOC red wine is produced on the calcareous and karstic soils of Alta Murgia, an area dominated by the historical charm of Castel del Monte. We are in Minervino Murge, at an altitude of about 250 metres, where the proximity of the old Vulture volcano and the significant temperature variation between day and night create the perfect environment for high-quality viticulture. 100% Aglianico, after the harvest, which is often slightly late in order to enhance the phenolic potential, the grapes ferment in steel. The key is the ageing process: the wine spends ten months in French and Hungarian oak barriques, followed by about eight months in the bottle. This passage in wood is skilfully calibrated: it must not cover up, but rather smooth out the tannins and add complexity, giving it that elegant softness that is the hallmark of Trentangeli. In the glass, it reveals a beautiful bright ruby red colour with purple hues that invite tasting. The nose is fresh and lively: the intensity of ripe red fruit, such as cherry and pomegranate, is combined with sweeter and more enveloping spicy notes of liquorice and white pepper, with a hint of cocoa. It is a complex aroma that evokes the Mediterranean and its scrubland. On the palate, however, it reveals its vibrant and savoury nature. Despite its excellent structure, it is smooth and pleasantly fresh on the palate. This is thanks to the tannins, which, although clearly present, are velvety and graceful, avoiding any harshness. The finish is persistent, dominated by a savoury and mineral finish that cleanses the palate and invites the next sip. Its balance between softness and freshness makes it extremely versatile. Excellent with first courses seasoned with meat ragù or with rabbit or chicken casserole.
When it comes to Apulian wine, the collective imagination immediately conjures up the intense colours of Salento, the red earth and the enveloping warmth. But there is an area in the heart of Alta Murgia where the landscape changes, becoming more austere, almost lunar. It is here, among the hills of Minervino Murge, that the Antinori family, with its centuries-old experience, planted the roots of the Bocca di Lupo estate. Why here? The decision to invest in this land more than twenty years ago was born from a combination of passion, courage and a firm belief in the enormous, and at times unexpressed, quality potential of the region. The goal has always been clear: to rediscover and enhance the great native grape varieties, offering an interpretation that combines the character of tradition with the elegance and depth that only a great winery can bring out. The estate is located in the Castel del Monte DOC area, a magical, wild place, protected by the shadow of the magnificent and mysterious castle of Frederick II of Swabia. The heart of Bocca di Lupo is represented by grape varieties such as Aglianico, which finds one of its highest expressions here in Puglia, producing austere wines with great ageing potential.
