A Bordeaux blend... Or rather, a Friulian blend made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown on unique soil. A red wine with something extra. This is Sassirossi, a name that leaves no room for interpretation and tells the story of its origins. We are in the fertile countryside of Mariano del Friuli, an area that falls within the Isonzo del Friuli DOC. The name derives from the Isonzo river, whose waters have shaped the soil for millennia. The real peculiarity here is the soil, composed of a bed of alluvial gravel and red clay that the locals affectionately call “sassi rossi” (red stones). This stony mix is fundamental: it forces the old vines, which here have an average age of 35 years, to sink their roots deep in search of water and nutrients. This effort results in a naturally lower yield and, consequently, extremely concentrated and rich grapes, the real secret of the wine's structure. 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, the former brings softness, enveloping and sweeter fruity notes, acting as a welcoming backdrop. Cabernet Sauvignon, on the other hand, is responsible for the tannic structure and that characteristic herbaceous touch, giving character and longevity potential. The careful vinification process begins with a strictly manual harvest. This is followed by prolonged maceration on the skins and repeated pumping over at a controlled temperature to extract colour and noble tannins. The final ageing takes place in 300-litre French oak barrels for 12 months. In the glass, it displays a beautiful intense ruby red colour with clear violet reflections that denote its youth and vitality. The nose is rich and complex. Notes of red undergrowth fruits such as blueberry and currant stand out, accompanied by a pleasant herbaceous scent reminiscent of Bordeaux varieties. On the finish, delicate hints of liquorice and sweet spices emerge. On the palate, it is dry, with a beautiful tannic structure that is robust but well-crafted. This is a red wine that knows its stuff and pairs effortlessly with structured dishes. A suggestion? Try it with a delicious dish of gnocchi with braised meat sauce or a roast leg of lamb. It is also perfect with game and semi-mature cheeses.
Masùt da Rive expresses its terroir with elegance and simplicity. The winery, now run by brothers Fabrizio and Marco Gallo, offers a range of highly recognisable wines. Their philosophy is simple: to produce wines that are an authentic expression of the terroir, combining respect for Friulian traditions with modern techniques. We are in the heart of the Friuli Isonzo DOC, in Mariano del Friuli. This is a special land, shaped by the proximity of the Isonzo river. A unique soil, rich in red clay and pebbles, deposited by ancient floods. These pebbles play a fundamental role: during the day they store the heat of the sun and at night they release it, ensuring optimal ripening of the grapes. Furthermore, interestingly, the Masùt da Rive vineyards are located right on the 46th parallel, the same latitude as the famous Burgundy region. This geographical coincidence is no small detail; it suggests a natural vocation for great structured whites, but also for elegant reds, primarily Pinot Noir. But there is more. The Gallo family does not just make good wine; they also care about how they make it. Masùt da Rive is an example of how agriculture can be modern and attentive, focusing on environmental and ethical sustainability. The winery relies on clean energy from the sun, and green choices are made in the vineyard that make a difference. This respect for the natural cycle of the plant and the environment translates into intact grapes and, consequently, wines with a unique character.
