Gerard Bertrand- Château l'Hospitalet, Route de Narbonne Plage, 11100 Narbonne, Francia
The year 462 AD officially marked the beginning of wine trade in the Languedoc, thanks to a historic decision by the Visigoth king Theodoric II. This remarkable red wine celebrates that distant moment. It is produced by Gérard Bertrand, former rugby champion and now a leading figure in biodynamic viticulture in the south of France. We are in Cabrières, one of the most fascinating areas of the appellation. Here the vineyards sink their roots into unique soils composed mainly of ancient schist. The proximity of the Mediterranean Sea provides constant warmth during the day, while the surrounding hills ensure strong temperature variations at night. This climatic contrast is the region’s true secret weapon. It allows the grapes to ripen slowly, concentrating sugars without sacrificing their natural freshness. The blend follows the classic recipe of the area. Syrah brings structure and deep spicy notes, Grenache adds softness, warmth and irresistible fruit, while Mourvèdre completes the picture with aromatic backbone and long-term complexity. As mentioned, vineyard management follows strict organic farming principles. In the cellar, everything revolves around respecting the raw material. Each variety is harvested at perfect ripeness and vinified separately. Long but carefully controlled macerations help extract the noblest aromas while softening the tannins. Afterwards, part of the wine ages for several months in fine French oak barrels. This maturation provides the final touch, giving the palate sumptuous structure without heaviness. In the glass it shows an intense, deep ruby-red colour. The nose opens with a true Mediterranean bouquet featuring blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum. Elegant hints of black pepper, dark cocoa and wild herbs soon follow. On the palate it is enveloping, warm and extraordinarily harmonious. The tannins are velvety and caress the palate, while an unexpected freshness supports the entire sip, making it fluid and inviting. The finish is remarkably long, persistent and delicately spicy.
The story goes that Gérard Bertrand harvested his first grapes back in 1975, working alongside his father Georges for the following 12 years. At the time, he was among the vineyards of Château de Villemajou in the heart of the AOC Corbières. Since then, nearly half a century later, Gérard’s activity has expanded enormously, now embracing virtually all the finest terroirs of southern France. What began as a small family estate has, under his leadership, become the region’s most important producer. Today, Gérard Bertrand oversees no fewer than 11 Châteaux producing all the major appellations of south-western France. For years, the company has also been recognised as one of the nation’s leading producers of organic and biodynamic wines. This is equally true in the world of rosé wines, including some of the most renowned and best-selling in the world.
