For lovers of typical local wines, this Rina Russa, Frappato Terre Siciliane IGT, is an almost obligatory choice. Frappato, in fact, is the most representative grape variety of Vittoria, and Rina Russa is a wonderful example. First, a curiosity about the name. "Rina Russa' means 'red sand' in Sicilian dialect and directly recalls the colour of the soil in the Vittoria area. Frappato in purity, after vinification the wine is left to mature for at least 4 to 6 months on the fermentation lees in stainless steel tanks, with frequent movement of the noble lees. The result is a wine characterised by a unique style, a perfect expression of the ancient clones selected on the estate. Brilliant ruby red in colour, Rina Russa presents aromas of red berries with the unmistakable wild strawberry, typical for the variety. In the mouth, the wine is pleasantly round, fresh and characterised by ripe tannins. Thanks to its special characteristics and extraordinarily fruity taste, Frappato is the wine that is traditionally drunk with fish in Vittoria. Excellent with tuna, swordfish or oily fish. However, it is also perfect with cured meats and cheeses.
This is the story of two siblings: Stefano and Marina Girelli. Two passionate mountain winemakers whose roots lie in the valleys of Trentino. Looking for new challenges, in 2001 they decided to buy a beautiful estate in Sicily. And to start there, more than a thousand kilometres from home, a new oenological adventure. This is how Santa Tresa, an organic winery, was born, located in the municipality of Vittoria, South West of Sicily. The estate is located about 240 metres above sea level and covers 50 hectares, 39 of which are vineyards. Native clones of Frappato, Nero d'Avola and Grillo, typical and characteristic of the area, have always been grown here. These have been joined by international varieties, such as Viognier which, despite its French origins, seems to have found ideal climatic conditions in this enchanted corner of Sicily.
