Imbottigliato all'origine da Firriato Winery- via Trapani n. 4 - 91027 Paceco (TP)
Three historic vineyards whose roots run deep into limestone-rich soils, caressed by a constant breeze blowing directly from the Mediterranean Sea. It is here, in this enchanting landscape, that Firriato’s Nero d'Avola Harmonium is born, a red wine that refuses to compromise. The winery selected three specific plots in the Agro di Trapani, known as Ferla, Lepre and Beccaccia, to create a cru that expresses the full power of western Sicily. The Agro di Trapani is characterised by a unique microclimate. The days are warm and sunny, while the nights bring significant temperature variations thanks to the cooling sea breezes. This temperature shift is the wine’s true secret. It allows the grapes to ripen slowly, concentrating sugars without losing the fresh acidity that makes every sip dynamic and never cloying. Made exclusively from Nero d’Avola, the flagship grape of Sicilian winemaking, this wine offers a masterful interpretation of the variety. It is not the usual powerful and heavy red. Thanks to Firriato’s careful clone selection, the grape’s natural acidic backbone is enhanced, balancing the richness and polyphenolic depth that are characteristic of the variety. After a strictly manual harvest in small crates, the wine undergoes traditional red-wine vinification at controlled temperature. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, it begins an important ageing journey. The wine rests for 12 months in both French and American oak barriques before completing its evolution with at least a further year of bottle ageing. In the glass, it displays a deep, impenetrable ruby colour that immediately suggests its impressive structure. On the nose, aromas of cherries, plums and ripe blackberries blend seamlessly with spicy nuances of nutmeg, black pepper and an indulgent hint of dark chocolate. On the palate, its body and extraordinary freshness stand out immediately. The entry is soft, almost velvety, leaving behind a trail of perfectly balanced tannins. The finish is exceptionally long and clean. At the table, it calls for dishes with intense flavours.
Among Sicily’s most representative wineries, Firriato undoubtedly stands out. Modern in concept, style and marketing, Firriato was born from the vision of Salvatore Di Gaetano, an entrepreneur from Trapani, always supported by his charming wife Vinzia, who for years also represented the winery’s public image around the world. We are in the 1980s, and Sicilian wine is about to experience its golden age, its renaissance, as many have described it. Today, more than 40 years later, Firriato is a well-established winery based in Paceco, between Trapani and Erice, with vineyards spread across various areas of Sicily. Its vineyard holdings cover around 470 hectares divided among eight estates, including one on the slopes of Mount Etna and another on the island of Favignana. While the utmost respect for nature governs vineyard management, technology in the winery helps the winemaking team bring out the best in every grape variety, whether native or international. The result is a range of wines that receive accolades from critics worldwide and are sought after by enthusiasts year after year.
