Domaine Romuald Petit, Les Dîmes, 71570 Saint-Vérand
Who here has ever heard the name “Pinot Beurot”? Don’t worry if you are among the many who have never come across it. It is in fact the old local name for Pinot Gris, coined by Cistercian monks because of the greyish colour of its berries, similar to the rough woollen cloaks they wore, known as “bure”. This Heritage from Domaine Romuald Petit was born precisely from the desire to preserve this piece of history. We are in Saint-Véran, in the southernmost part of Burgundy, where the landscape becomes softer and the sun shines more generously than in the Côte d’Or. Here, the soils are a mosaic of clay and limestone with veins of granite that give the wine an unexpected mineral tension. Romuald Petit manages the estate according to a strict organic philosophy: no chemical shortcuts, only profound respect for the land, reflected in every sip. In this blend, Chardonnay brings structure and elegance, Pinot Blanc contributes citrus freshness, while the precious Pinot Beurot adds a spicy roundness and an extraordinary aromatic complexity. The grapes are fully destemmed to ensure aromatic purity. Fermentation takes place in oak barriques, followed by ageing that can last from 10 to 18 months, always in wood. In the glass, it reveals a brilliant golden hue with reflections tending towards deep straw yellow. On the nose, white peach, acacia flowers and a hint of white pepper typical of Beurot, all framed by a delicate toasted bread crust note. On the palate it is full, enveloping, almost buttery, yet immediately refreshed by a savoury streak that invites another sip straight away. The finish is long and clean, with a lingering return of toasted hazelnut. Want to make it feel perfectly at home at the table? Try it with chicken escalopes with mushrooms or even a seafood risotto. The only limit is our imagination.
We are in the south of Burgundy, a land where the landscape seems to fade gently towards Beaujolais. Here, in the picturesque village of Saint-Vérand, lies Domaine Romuald Petit, an estate that perfectly embodies the essence of French artisanal winemaking: hands stained with soil, eyes looking towards the future, and a profound respect for everything nature provides. Romuald Petit is not simply a winemaker, but a guardian of landscapes. Although the estate has steadily grown over the years, Romuald has managed to preserve its family spirit and the meticulous approach of small-scale production. The heart of his work lies in an extraordinary vineyard heritage. His vines form a mosaic of different ages and personalities. They range from young plantings (between 5 and 15 years old) to true historical monuments, with vines over a century old, planted immediately after the phylloxera crisis. This diversity allows Romuald to work with incredible nuances: while the younger vines bring freshness and vibrancy, the “Vieilles Vignes” (old vines) provide concentration, structure, and a depth that only time can create. The Domaine extends over approximately 16 hectares, embracing some of the most fascinating appellations in the area.
