Imbottigliato all'origine da Cantine Volpi, Strada Statale per Voghera, 72, 15057 Tortona AL
A Piedmontese white wine that for decades remained in the shadows, almost disappearing from the vineyards. Today its name is on the lips of every serious wine enthusiast: Timorasso. We are in Tortona, in the province of Alessandria, in that strip of hills where Piedmont approaches the borders of Liguria, Lombardy and Emilia. The Colli Tortonesi do not enjoy the fame of the Langhe, but their clay-limestone soils and the breezes that arrive from the sea through the Apennines create ideal conditions for producing outstanding white wines. The true prince of these lands is Timorasso, already mentioned in agronomic treatises in the Middle Ages, later almost disappearing in favor of easier grape varieties. Its revival is thanks to Walter Massa, who since the 1980s has bet everything on this difficult and capricious native variety. Today Timorasso vineyards in the Colli Tortonesi have grown again from just a few hectares to more than 1,500. A silent revolution that has changed the face of Piedmontese viticulture. Cantine Volpi is an integral part of this story, producing Timorasso under certified organic farming. This low-yielding variety ripens late and does not forgive mistakes in the vineyard. But when everything works well, the result is a white wine that has few equals in Italy for structure and longevity. In the glass the color is bright straw yellow with golden reflections. On the nose it opens with ripe pear, yellow apple and white peach, followed by floral hints, a touch of honey and almond. With a few minutes in the glass, precise mineral and almost saline sensations emerge. On the palate it is full and structured, with a lively acidity that extends every sip. Marked salinity and a long elegant finish with citrus echoes. Timorasso is one of the few Italian white wines with real aging potential. This wine expresses itself well already today but can easily evolve for 8–10 years, developing over time those characteristic hydrocarbon notes typical of the grape variety, complex and highly prized.
With over a century of history behind it, Cantine Volpi of Tortona has passed through five generations, transforming from a small town osteria into an international point of reference, without ever losing the compass that points straight toward the authenticity of the Colli Tortonesi. Everything began in 1914, when the great-grandmother Cristina, together with her children, purchased the osteria “Il Cappel Verde” in the center of Tortona. At that time wine was sold by the glass and Barbera was already the undisputed queen of local tables. From that wooden counter began a journey that led the Volpi family to recognize, before many others, the potential of an area nestled between Piedmont, Lombardy, Liguria and Emilia-Romagna. Today the winery is led by Carlo Volpi, joined by his wife Laura and their son Marco. If there is one thing that distinguishes their approach, it is foresight. Already in the 1990s, when organic farming was still a concept for a few “visionaries”, Carlo firmly believed in it. This philosophy found its fullest expression in Cascina La Zerba in Volpedo, acquired in 2003: here about 10 hectares of vineyards are cultivated under certified organic farming.
