Pinotage could be called the only truly indigenous South African grape variety. After all, it originates right here, albeit in a laboratory. Technically it is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, obtained by Abraham Perold in 1925, in the laboratories of the University of Stellenbosch. Perfect for the climate and soil of this fascinating territory, the Pinotage inherits from its noble parent, the Pinot Noir, a capricious nature capable, however, of expressing itself at very high levels, if well cared for and processed. Perfectly passed test for the one proposed here by Ayama. In the glass it has a beautiful deep ruby red colour. The nose reveals a richly fruity wine, with flavors of ripe plums and cherries. In the mouth it is rich and full-bodied. It ranges from ripe fruit, blackcurrant and plum, to an intriguing memory of underbrush and mushroom. Balanced in every component, it is a red wine that can count on a long lingering finish.
South Africa with an Italian heart. This is Ayama Wines, a beautiful winery located in one of the most fascinating corners of the Dark Continent, the southern slopes of the Perdeberg mountain. Founded in 1685 by the Frenchman Martin Pouisson, today it can count on about 170 hectares of vineyards. The Italian heart comes from the two entrepreneurs, Attilio and Michela who, with other Italian partners, friends and lovers of South Africa, decided to buy the estate in 2005. With an entrepreneurial intent, no doubt, but also philanthropic. The business, in fact, hosts a community of about 50 people, including adults and children, who collaborate in the maintenance of the farm, which since 1993 has been part of South Africa's national heritage conservation project. One last bit of trivia: Ayama is a Xhosa word meaning ''someone to lean on''. Perfect to describe the feeling that drove the two Italian entrepreneurs to embark on this adventure.
