Imbottigliato all'origine da WEINGUT SCHLOSS ENGLAR VIA PIGANO' 42- St. MICHAEL - EPPAN (BZ)
The world of Schloss Englar is represented by a castle that dominates the landscape of Appiano, where a Pinot Blanc is born that tells the nobility of the territory without unnecessary embellishment. We are in the heart of South Tyrol, precisely in San Michele Appiano, where viticulture has been an art for centuries. The Berg from Schloss Englar originates here, in a privileged geographical setting where cool mountain air currents meet the warmth of the Bolzano basin. Made from 100% Pinot Blanc, the vineyards where Berg is produced lie at an altitude that allows the grapes to retain vibrant acidity, a key element for the wine’s longevity. Harvesting is carried out strictly by hand between the end of August and the beginning of September, selecting only perfect bunches that reach the cellar intact and fresh. After gentle pressing at low pressure, the must ferments half in large wooden casks and half in stainless steel tanks. This dual approach allows the wine to gain structure and complexity while maintaining its renowned freshness. The wine then matures for seven months on fine lees, giving the palate a creamy texture before bottling in May. Deep straw yellow with greenish reflections; on the nose a clean bouquet immediately recalling fresh citrus fruits and the crispness of green apple and pear. Subtle toasted aromas from the wood ageing then emerge, adding a refined gourmet touch without ever covering the fruit. On the palate it is razor-sharp: mineral, harmonious and with remarkable persistence. At the table it pairs beautifully with traditional speck dumplings in broth or with butter and sage, but also with sea bass baked in salt or crispy vegetable tempura.
Wine Road. South Tyrol. Here the silhouette of the mountains meets the perfect geometry of the vineyards, and in San Michele Appiano stands Schloss Englar, a Gothic castle that seems to come straight out of a fairy tale but actually tells one of the most authentic wine stories of the region. Owned by the Counts Khuen-Belasi since 1640, the estate has witnessed centuries of agricultural history. In 2012, after more than eighty years during which the grapes were delivered to the local cooperative winery, Count Johannes Khuen-Belasi decided to resume winemaking on the estate, bringing the entire production process back within the historic walls of the castle. Such a remarkable place deserved its own label, capable of reflecting the soul of these lands. The philosophy of Schloss Englar is simple yet rigorous: wine is born in the vineyard, not in the cellar. For Johannes, “producing outstanding wines requires vines that grow harmoniously in a healthy environment.” For this reason, the estate has embraced organic farming, eliminating synthetic chemical products and respecting natural cycles. In the vineyard a deliberate reduction of yields is practiced: each vine is assessed individually to ensure that only the best clusters reach maturity. This “craft-driven” approach allows the estate to obtain healthy, characterful grapes while minimizing technical intervention during vinification. The estate’s approximately 7–10 hectares of vineyards enjoy a privileged position, where unique conditions give the wines vibrant freshness and a striking mineral character, distinctive features of the great white wines of South Tyrol.
