Imbottigliato all'origine da WEINGUT SCHLOSS ENGLAR VIA PIGANO' 42- St. MICHAEL - EPPAN (BZ)
A Gewürztraminer that decides to abandon the clothes of the “classic white wine” to wear a proud copper armour instead. That is exactly what happens with this Mitterberg IGT Orange from Schloss Englar. A wine that breaks conventions and leads us straight into the heart of a highly successful sensory experiment. But let’s start from the beginning. We are in San Michele Appiano, in the hilly belt where the vineyards of Schloss Englar benefit from a unique microclimate. Here the family of the Counts Khuen-Belasi has cultivated vines since 1640. The distinctive feature of this area lies in the strong temperature variations, which allow Gewürztraminer to develop extraordinary aromatic complexity. Here that complexity takes the form of an “Orange” interpretation. The Mitterberg IGT designation is a geographical indication of South Tyrol that allows producers the freedom to experiment with less conventional techniques than the strict DOC regulations. Controlled creativity, where the bond with the territory remains unbreakable while extended skin contact can produce surprising results. In this case the harvest takes place by hand towards the end of September, selecting only the grapes that have reached perfect phenolic ripeness, essential when working with skins. After destemming and crushing, the must remains in contact with the skins for about two weeks in stainless steel vats. And here the magic happens: indigenous yeasts carry out the fermentation while extracting colour, tannins and deep aromas. After gentle pressing, the wine rests for twelve months in French oak tonneaux, where spontaneous malolactic fermentation takes place, followed by three months in stainless steel before bottling. In the glass the wine shows a fascinating copper colour, bright and dense. The bouquet is typical of Gewürztraminer, but with an extra gear. Oriental spices, ripe exotic fruits and a distinctive hint of nutmeg intertwine in an intense and complex profile. On the palate it is dry, austere and marked by an elegant tannic structure that cleans the mouth and extends the finish beautifully. A real wildcard for complex dishes, it pairs wonderfully with a spicy fish soup or chicken curry. Excellent also with very aged blue cheeses or Asian cuisine.
Wine Road. South Tyrol. Here the silhouette of the mountains meets the perfect geometry of the vineyards, and in San Michele Appiano stands Schloss Englar, a Gothic castle that seems to come straight out of a fairy tale but actually tells one of the most authentic wine stories of the region. Owned by the Counts Khuen-Belasi since 1640, the estate has witnessed centuries of agricultural history. In 2012, after more than eighty years during which the grapes were delivered to the local cooperative winery, Count Johannes Khuen-Belasi decided to resume winemaking on the estate, bringing the entire production process back within the historic walls of the castle. Such a remarkable place deserved its own label, capable of reflecting the soul of these lands. The philosophy of Schloss Englar is simple yet rigorous: wine is born in the vineyard, not in the cellar. For Johannes, “producing outstanding wines requires vines that grow harmoniously in a healthy environment.” For this reason, the estate has embraced organic farming, eliminating synthetic chemical products and respecting natural cycles. In the vineyard a deliberate reduction of yields is practiced: each vine is assessed individually to ensure that only the best clusters reach maturity. This “craft-driven” approach allows the estate to obtain healthy, characterful grapes while minimizing technical intervention during vinification. The estate’s approximately 7–10 hectares of vineyards enjoy a privileged position, where unique conditions give the wines vibrant freshness and a striking mineral character, distinctive features of the great white wines of South Tyrol.
