    "The Barossan" Chardonnay 2022
    • Peter Lehmann, the man who saved local growers in the 1970s with nothing more than a handshake, always believed that a great wine should first and foremost express the generosity of its place of origin. This Chardonnay is the heir to that philosophy: a white that isn’t afraid to show its strength, while maintaining natural elegance and a remarkably approachable drinkability. The grapes for this label come from selected vineyards with optimal sun exposure, balanced by cool nights that help preserve acidity in the berries. Although the Barossa Valley is not a DOC in the European sense, its name is a guarantee of quality and typicity. Here, Chardonnay expresses an aromatic power rarely found in cooler regions of the world, becoming a benchmark for those seeking full-bodied whites. The grapes are harvested at perfect ripeness to ensure the softness typical of the Lehmann style. The final blend brings together different parcels of the valley, creating a perfect balance between freshness and structure. After gentle pressing, part of the must ferments in small French oak vessels. This is followed by lees ageing, which enriches the wine’s texture, making it almost creamy. This technique allows the oak-derived notes to integrate seamlessly with the exuberant fruit, without becoming overpowering. In the glass, it shows a bright golden yellow colour, a sign of its structure. On the nose, it’s a journey to the tropics: ripe pineapple, yellow peach and melon stand out, followed by a distinctive touch of melted butter and vanilla. On the palate, it is broad, almost chewable. Roundness is its signature, with a long, clean finish recalling toasted hazelnut and candied citrus. Serve it with a creamy scampi risotto, but it also works beautifully with herb-roasted chicken.

Peter Lehmann embodies the soul of the Barossa Valley. This is not just a winery but a true legend of viticulture. The story of Peter Lehmann Wines begins in 1979, during a period of deep crisis for Barossa growers. Due to a surplus of grapes, large wine companies chose not to honour their purchase contracts, leaving hundreds of families with crops rotting on the vines. Peter, who at the time worked as a director in one of these major companies, refused to accept this betrayal. He resigned and, with a handshake and a bold loan, decided to buy the grapes himself and vinify them independently. Thus, “Masterson Barossa Vineyards” was born, later renamed after him. This act earned him the nickname “Baron of Barossa” and created an unbreakable bond with local growers, a relationship of trust that continues to this day across generations. Today, the company does not own vast estates but collaborates with over 140 independent growers. This approach allows access to an extraordinary variety of microclimates and soils, ensuring remarkable consistency in quality. Every sip is a tribute to the man who, rather than betray his fellow growers, ended up creating a legend.
