Boschendal Wines, Pniel Road, Groot Drakenstein (South Africa)
In the heart of the Western Cape wine region, between the hills of Stellenbosch and the sea breezes of False Bay, lies 1685 Chenin Blanc, a South African white wine produced by Boschendal. Produced exclusively from Chenin Blanc grapes from selected vineyards located between 100 and 250 metres above sea level, the vines, with an average age of between 12 and 28 years, are rooted in granite soils and benefit from a climate that promotes slow ripening and optimal preservation of the grapes' natural acidity. After all, Chenin Blanc, originally from the Loire Valley in France, has found an ideal environment in the South African climate to express its characteristics to the fullest, giving rise to fresh, fruity and elegant wines. The grapes are harvested by hand in the early hours of the morning to preserve their freshness. After careful selection, 20% of the must ferments in large oak barrels, known as foudres, and remains in contact with the fine lees for six weeks, undergoing weekly bâtonnage to increase the wine's complexity and creaminess. The remaining 80%, on the other hand, ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, maintaining the freshness and expressiveness of the fruit. Green in colour with straw-yellow reflections, the nose reveals exotic aromas of mango, peach and pineapple, accompanied by citrus notes of lime. On the palate, it offers a fruity soul, with elegant peach and citrus characteristics, enriched by a hint of honey-glazed walnuts. The wine is well-balanced, full-bodied and has a long, persistent finish. Already enjoyable today, 1685 Chenin Blanc has an ageing potential of at least five years, during which it will develop further aromatic complexity and greater depth.
