LA CROTTA DI VEGNERON Coop. Agr.Piazza Roncas, 2 Chambave (AO) 11023
In the Aosta Valley, some bottles spend months deep inside the mountain, cradled by complete darkness and absolute silence in an ancient mine. This is the case for Valle d'Aosta DOC Chambave Muscat Mines by La Crotta di Vegneron. But let’s take it step by step. The Aosta Valley is a striking example of heroic viticulture, where vineyards cling to breathtaking slopes. In Chambave, a village that seems straight out of a medieval fairytale, the sun beats down strongly during the day, yet the air turns icy as soon as night falls. This temperature variation is the secret that gives the grapes an incredible aromatic intensity. Crotta di Vegneron, a cooperative bringing together over seventy growers, has chosen to link the destiny of this white wine to the magnetite mines of Cogne. Once, people worked hard here to extract iron. Today, at 2000 metres above sea level, the tunnels offer an ideal refuge with perfect temperature and humidity for wine ageing. A slow and almost magical process. The Chambave sub-area is renowned for transforming a grape often associated with sweetness into a dry and structured white wine. Here, Moscato Bianco reigns in purity, without the need for support. A grape that in this valley finds a rocky minerality capable of balancing its natural floral exuberance. Bright straw yellow, crossed by greenish reflections that radiate youth, on the nose this white wine is anything but shy. A cascade of yellow flowers and white peach, with a mineral undertone reminiscent of wet stone. On the palate, it is a continuous surprise. Despite what the nose suggests, the sip is dry, smooth and pleasantly savoury. The finish is long and clean, leaving a memory of alpine herbs that invites another sip straight away. At the table it wins everyone over. Perfect with a classic Valdostan fondue or with Asian cuisine such as sushi or prawn tempura. For a more classic pairing, try it with juniper trout.
Not many people are familiar with the quality of wines from the Aosta Valley. That is not surprising. Production is so limited that often only true enthusiasts get the chance to taste them. Yet, despite the small quantities, the quality is often outstanding. The area of Chambave, a central village in the Aosta Valley, located 18 km east of Aosta and 7 km west of Saint-Vincent, has a long-standing winemaking tradition. The earliest written records referring to wines produced here, at the foot of Europe’s highest peaks, date back to the late Middle Ages. The soil is ideal for growing quality grapes, with sandy, stony, shallow soils rich in mineral salts. Here we find La Crotta di Vegneron, a young winery made up of nearly 100 growers who together cultivate just over 30 hectares of vineyards. Their speciality lies in wines made from the region’s unique native grape varieties, without neglecting the more traditional ones. Honest, authentic mountain wines.
