Maria Gioana is the interesting Barbera d'Alba DOC wine offered here by Giacosa Fratelli. Its name derives from an old Piedmontese folk song about a woman, Maria Gioana, who likes to drink wine and all her ailments are cured in this way without the need for a visit to the doctor. In this case, it is a red wine made from pure Barbera grapes, carefully selected from the company's vineyards in Canavere, Madonna Como and Bordini. Once in the winery, these grapes are vinified separately and left to age in small French oak barrels. After maturation, the wine spends long months in the bottle, where it completes, harmonises and enhances its remarkable characteristics. Already good today, it is a wine capable of maturing for a long time in the bottle. In the glass it has a beautiful intense ruby red colour, with a vinous and intense bouquet. In the mouth, however, it reveals itself immediately as a pleasantly fruity wine. Dry and fresh, thanks to its natural acidity, it can age for several years in the bottle. When bringing it to the table, remember to prefer combinations such as roasts, boiled meats or well matured cheeses.
Cantina Giacosa fratelli: over 100 years of history. A long family history, made up of values handed down from father to son. We are in Neive, in the province of Cuneo. This is where it all began, with four brothers, Leone, Giovanni Battista, Costantino and Giuseppe, who settled there at the end of the 19th century to work as sharecroppers. Of the four, however, only Giuseppe cultivated the dream of having a winery in which to produce the wine from the hills where he was born. And on a day in June 1895, this dream could finally be realised. He learned that a wine cellar in Borgonuovo di Neive was for sale at the price of three thousand lire. A sum that he could never have afforded. Legend has it, however, that that night he had a dream and the next day he played the numbers suggested to him at Lotto while he was sleeping. It seems impossible. But with the winnings, he bought the winery. From generation to generation, it is always the family that manages the winery, with two clear reference elements: naturalness and quality, in every phase of transformation, from the vineyard to the cellar. Today Cantina Giacosa fratelli can count on about 50 hectares, divided into different areas.
