Di Majo Norante Contrada Ramitello via Vino Ramitello 4 86042 Campomarino (CB) – Italy
In Molise, a small yet proud region, the Di Majo Norante family has been producing wine since the 19th century. We are in Campomarino, where the vines root themselves in clay soils just a few steps from the Adriatic Sea. Here the sun shines intensely, yet sea breezes cool the grapes, creating a perfect microclimate for wines of great character. The estate stands on what were once the lands of the Marchesi Norante di Santa Cristina, a detail that adds a touch of rural nobility to every bottle. The star of Contado is Aglianico, here in purity. Known as the “Barolo of the South” for its powerful structure, in Molise this grape expresses itself in a slightly warmer and more approachable way than in Campania. The grapes are carefully harvested and taken to the cellar for meticulous vinification. The secret of its softness lies in the extended skin contact of about a month, allowing full extraction of colour and aromas. After malolactic fermentation, the wine rests for one year in barriques and tonneaux, then completes its ageing in stainless steel for a further three years. In the glass, Contado impresses with its deep ruby red colour, enriched by garnet reflections that hint at its maturity. On the nose, it delivers an intense and broad bouquet, where very ripe red fruit stands out alongside light spicy notes from oak ageing. On the palate, the experience continues. The sip is soft, almost velvety, with a generous body that fills the mouth without ever feeling heavy. The tannins are present yet well polished, perfectly integrated into a solid structure. The finish is pleasant, leaving a clear aftertaste of sour cherry that invites another sip. Already enjoyable today, it will evolve over time towards more tertiary notes and greater complexity, making the wait a true pleasure. At the table, it naturally calls for robust dishes. For a regional pairing, try it with “pallotte cacio e uova” in tomato sauce: a rustic match that will impress.
Di Majo Norante has been producing wines from its own grapes since the 1800s, as evidenced by the historic cellars beneath the village square and the old family palace in Campomarino. We are in the province of Campobasso, in Molise. Today, as in the past, the winery produces wines exclusively from grapes grown on the 123 hectares of the ancient estate of the Marchesi Norante di Santa Cristina. With a traditional approach, aiming to preserve all the characteristics of Mediterranean grape varieties. Ancient grapes such as Aglianico, Montepulciano, Sangiovese and the precious Tintilia for red wines, alongside Falanghina and Greco for whites. Continuous experimentation with these varieties has allowed Di Majo Norante wines to reach remarkable quality levels, gaining increasing market share both in Italy and internationally. Great wines that respond well to the complexity of contemporary taste.
