A fine white made from Viognier grapes in large majority, with a part of Chardonnay to add complexity and elegance. We are talking about Le Vie del Mare, Maremma Toscana Bianco DOC proposed by Cantina Cooperativa dei Vignaioli del Morellino. Vineyards 6/10 years old, well exposed at an altitude between 60 and 180 metres above sea level. The grapes reach full ripeness at the end of August, when they are harvested and quickly brought to the cellar for processing. To preserve the freshness and health of the initial fruit, the grapes are kept with carbonic snow until pressing. Fermentation in stainless steel for the Viognier and in new barriques for the Chardonnay. Then the wine matures in steel for 3 months in contact with its fine lees. A wine of beautiful freshness, it is at its best in the first years after the harvest. Straw yellow with greenish highlights, the nose offers elegant aromatic notes reminiscent of medicinal herbs and wild flowers. All this against a pleasantly fruity background. In the mouth it is dry but soft, medium-bodied white, and has a lively minerality that makes it even more enjoyable. Perfect as an aperitif or with appetisers and fish-based first courses. Also excellent with classic grilled meats.
That of Cantina del Morellino is a fine story of successful cooperation in Tuscany. Founded in 1972, in fact, the cooperative winery of the Vignaioli del Morellino di Scansano was born thanks to the initiative of a small group of local producers, aware that in an increasingly large and global market, joining forces could really make the difference. That the initiative was the right one is proved by the fact that in the space of a few years that small group of visionaries has gradually expanded, without losing the helm and without compromising. In the 1980s, in fact, when many cooperatives decided to concentrate on quantity, the Vignaioli del Morellino continued to focus on quality. Huge investments have therefore been made over the years, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Investments that, over time, have fortunately paid off. Today there are about 170 members of the winery, who work about 700 hectares of vineyards with passion and skill. Excellent quality, at excellent prices. This is, 50 years after its foundation, the cooperative winery of the Vignaioli del Morellino di Scansano. Certainly one of the most interesting production realities of the entire Maremma.
