It is said that sparrows go crazy for the sweet and crunchy berries of a particular grape. It is from this curious preference of nature that Passerina is born, a variety that has found its perfect home in the Marche region. Lajella by Cantina dei Colli Ripani comes from Ripatransone, a village perched at nearly 500 metres above sea level, overlooking the Adriatic like a natural balcony. Here, the landscape is a maze of gullies and clay hills, where sea breezes and typical temperature variations keep the grapes healthy and vibrant. A fun fact: Ripatransone holds the record for the narrowest alley in Italy, just 43 centimetres wide, but while its streets may be tight, its wines are anything but, showing remarkable personality and breadth. We are in the heart of Offida DOCG, an appellation that has elevated local native grapes to internationally recognised excellence. 100% Passerina: to produce Lajella, Cantina dei Colli Ripani follows a meticulous process that begins with the immediate separation of skins from the must. This is followed by “debourbage”, a cold static clarification technique that naturally removes impurities while preserving the aromatic core of the fruit. Fermentation takes place at strictly controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks, a choice that locks in freshness and delicate aromas. In the glass, the wine appears pale straw yellow and bright. On the nose, it is immediately fresh and crisp, with notes of green apple reminiscent of a summer morning in the countryside. With a little time in the glass, the bouquet becomes softer and more enveloping, revealing hints of acacia and broom. On the palate it is fruity, extremely pleasant and long-lasting.
Colli Ripani: we build our future one step at a time. We are in the Marche region, in the hilly area that follows river valleys down to the Adriatic. And we are at about 500 metres above sea level, despite being incredibly close to the coast. This is where Cantina dei Colli Ripani is located, one of the most well-known and productive wineries in the region. Founded in 1969, its first vinification dates back to 1977. Today it relies on the work of over 330 “local” growers, united by the desire to enhance local wine production and particularly the native grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Pecorino and Passerina. The cooperative winery actively supports each member’s work and coordinates all stages of the process: from vineyard work to processing the raw materials, right through to marketing the finished product. This allows members to receive a fair agricultural income, ensuring the sustainability of their work and preserving long-standing traditions.
