There is nothing better than a wine made from a blend of two very different grape varieties to appreciate the work of an oenologist. As in this case, where Merlot, a noble grape variety of French origin, but cultivated all over the world, meets Lagrein, a much rarer grape, native to the mountains of Northern Italy. This winning combination of two fascinating, full-bodied and velvety red wines creates a true love story of ripe tannins and fruity notes that meet spicy and floral nuances. Alcoholic fermentation at controlled temperature, in this case a vat with a wide mouth is used, where the must rests for about 10 days. At the end of this phase, malolactic fermentation follows and the wine is matured in barriques, partly new and partly used, or in small oak barrels. In the glass it has a beautiful dark and intense ruby red colour. On the nose it amazes for the richness of its scents, with typical notes of berries, vanilla and coffee. In the mouth, however, it is the velvety tannins that characterise the sip. But also the aromatic richness and good persistence. A full-bodied and complex wine, it demands an intense combination at table. Excellent, for example, with game or hard, flavoursome cheeses.
Sometimes a few numbers are enough to understand everything. In the case of Cantina Merano, based in Marlengo, on the hills overlooking the city, the numbers are simple. Between 300 and 900 metres above sea level, the vineyards enjoy perfect exposure and the beneficial temperature range that every wine lover seeks like the Holy Grail. Over 1940 hours of sunshine per year are enjoyed by the vineyards here. There are 16 grape varieties in the vineyards, which produce 60% of the red wines (quality) and 40% of the white wines. Of these varieties, three are indigenous to the region and produce wines with an unmistakable character. The winery produces a total of 1.3 million bottles a year. The secret? Hard manual work, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, to ensure careful and gentle processing of each grape variety. In the cellar, in particular, tradition and innovation are combined with expertise, foresight and care. The philosophy that guides every choice is that of "Less is more", because the character of the grapes must still be recognisable in the glass of wine.
