Imbottigliato all'origine dalla Cantina Soc.del Vermentino
Gallura is not just picture-postcard beaches. Here, on hills ranging from 100 to 450 metres above sea level, vines sink their roots into potassium-rich granite soil: a combination that gives Vermentino grapes their natural minerality. This is why, in 1956, twenty-two winegrowers joined forces and founded the Cantina Sociale del Vermentino. Today, there are 350 members who cultivate around 600 hectares. Nord Est is the result of a manual harvest at the first light of dawn. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and the free-run juice is immediately drained off. Fermentation takes place in steel tanks and the wine is left in contact with the fine lees for a few months, with light bâtonnage, to give volume to the finished wine without obscuring its original fragrance. In the glass, it shines with a beautiful straw yellow colour with greenish reflections. The nose alternates between white peach, lemon zest, rosemary, broom and the typical echo of bitter almond. In the mouth, it is taut and dry, crossed by a salty wave that invites a second taste. The finish is very clean, reminiscent of yellow-fleshed fruit, fresh herbs and mineral sensations. This Vermentino is a sure bet at the table. It pairs well with raw red prawns, for example, where the sweetness of the shellfish is counterbalanced by the savouriness of the wine. It is also excellent with a nice seafood fregola or, as an aperitif, paired with semi-aged Sardinian Pecorino cheese. Beware... it's addictive!
We are in Gallura, on the north-eastern coast of Sardinia, where vines have coexisted for centuries with granite, wind and intense light. This is where the Cantina Sociale del Vermentino Monti is located, founded in 1956 by 22 winegrowers who decided to team up to promote their most distinctive white wine. Today, the cooperative has around 350 members, 600 hectares of vineyards spread between Monti, Telti, Olbia and Loiri Porto San Paolo, and a production of almost 2.8 million bottles. The corporate structure remains the same as it was originally: each winegrower participates in agronomic decisions and receives ongoing training in order to raise the average quality of the grapes supplied. The focus on local resources is not just rhetoric. Since 2011, the roof of the winery has been home to 692 photovoltaic panels that cover a large part of its energy needs — a pioneering investment for the area, designed to reduce costs but above all to reduce its environmental footprint. This is complemented by integrated pest management practices in the vineyard and targeted use of water, which is essential in an area prone to summer drought. The company's philosophy can be summed up in three fundamental concepts: cooperate, innovate, preserve. Cooperate because the strength of the group allows small suppliers to compete with high standards. Innovate thanks to technology in the winery and an in-house analysis laboratory that checks every batch. Finally, preserve because the members know that they have a fragile and unique landscape heritage to pass on intact to future generations. Visitors to Monti will find all this. In a market where Sardinia risks being reduced to a single summer postcard, Cantina del Vermentino Monti prefers to speak with the voice of 350 families, proud to produce wines that taste of home but travel well all over the world.
