Weingut R&A Pfaffl
It may be because of the Austrian origin, and therefore not so common. It may be because of its beautiful, essential, uphill labeling. It may be because the grape variety from which it is made, Riesling, is capable of enthralling millions of sommeliers around the world. It may be for one or all of these reasons. The fact remains that Sonne, the Riesling offered here by Pfaffl is undoubtedly an ideal choice if we are looking for a white with great personality. The grapes come from the area of Stetten im Weinviertel, a very charming corner of Austria where the winters are quite harsh and the climate in general is decidedly cool. An ideal place for the production of Riesling grapes, which do particularly well in these conditions. Harvesting begins in October. The best grapes are selected by hand. Once in the cellar, they are destemmed and the resulting must is left to rest for 8-9 hours. Fermentation then begins, at a controlled temperature followed by an aging phase in steel tanks that precedes bottling. Golden yellow in color, the nose has classic hints of ripe apricots and peach, with a marked mineral note typical for the grape variety. In the mouth it is powerful, with perfect integration of the fruit. Fresh, definitely, it has a very long finish. It goes well with fish main courses and vegetarian cuisine.
Don't be intimidated by the hard-to-pronounce name, Pfaffl, or the not-so-common origin, at least for us Italians. For nearly 40 years, in fact, the Pfaffels have been considered among the most brilliant ambassadors of the Grüner Veltliner grape variety (also difficult to pronounce, but terribly pleasant to drink), but also of Riesling, Chardonnay, Zweigelt and St. Laurent in their country, Austria. The winery has a total of 110 hectares of vineyards, spread among 10 different villages in the southern Weinviertel area and Vienna. While this particular fragmentation makes vineyard management more complex, it also ensures a great diversity of soils and microclimates, which the Pfaffl people are able to express to perfection in their wines. An assortment that ranges from light and straightforward labels to concentrated and powerful wines, particularly with regard to the country's iconic grape variety, Grüner Veltliner, which is produced in numerous variants.
