    “Vom Buntsandstein” Riesling Pflaz 2024
    • In the Pfalz, the soil shines with a distinctive reddish hue. The credit goes to red sandstone, the famous “Buntsandstein”, an ancient rock that has the almost magical ability to absorb the warmth of the sun during the day and gently release it to the vines at night. This is where Riesling Vom Buntsandstein from Weingut Pflüger is born, a white wine that captures in a single sip the solar energy and vibrant freshness of German soils. We are in Bad Dürkheim, one of the most renowned wine areas in Germany, where the Pflüger family has cultivated the land for generations with almost sacred respect for nature. This wine belongs to the Pfalz appellation, a region that benefits from an almost Mediterranean microclimate, protected by the hills of the forest that shield it from excessive rainfall. Here Riesling finds a unique expression: less sharp than in the Mosel but with a structure and aromatic richness that make it immediately recognisable. It is no coincidence that it is the flagship grape variety of the region. In the cellar the goal is to interfere as little as possible. Fermentation takes place strictly in stainless steel at controlled temperature, as does the ageing. This choice is essential to preserve the varietal freshness of Riesling and to prevent any woody notes from masking the crystal-clear aromatic profile shaped by soil and climate. In the glass it shows a bright straw yellow colour with greenish reflections that reveal its youth. On the nose a delicate yet precise bouquet: fresh citrus notes of lime and grapefruit intertwine with hints of white peach. But it is the flinty mineral note that adds depth to the whole. On the palate it is wonderfully juicy. The typical acidity of the grape variety is perfectly balanced by an enveloping creaminess, leaving a long, savoury and remarkably persistent finish. A perfect match with vegetable or shrimp tempura and lightly spiced Asian dishes.

In the heart of the Pfalz, or Palatinate, there is a magical place called Bad Dürkheim. We are along the famous German Wine Route, in a region blessed with an almost Mediterranean climate where figs, almond trees and lemons grow alongside the vineyards. Here the Pflüger family, over more than two centuries, has transformed a traditional mixed farm into an international reference point for forward-thinking viticulture. When the concept of “organic” was still far from the radar of the global market, Bernd Pflüger had a courageous intuition: to abandon chemicals and return to a form of agriculture that respects natural cycles. This pioneering vision was embraced and taken a step further by his son Alexander, who in 2008 converted the entire estate to biodynamics, obtaining the prestigious Demeter certification. For Alexander, biodynamics is not a trend but a “choice of freedom”. It means regenerating the soil, encouraging biodiversity and allowing every plant to find its own balance. Not bare soils, but a vibrant ecosystem of herbs, flowers and insects, protected by the characteristic dry-stone walls of red sandstone that absorb the heat of the day and release it during the night. If the work in the vineyard is meticulous, in the cellar the key word is “minimalism”. Alexander intervenes as little as possible: spontaneous fermentations with native yeasts, no aggressive fining and a skilful use of wood so the wine can breathe and mature in its own time. The result is wines “of character, depth and homeland”, not crafted to immediately please the palate with artificial aromas, but to move those who seek authenticity.
