Champagne Soutiran - 51150 Ambonnay, Champagne – Francia
In the heart of Champagne, there is a family that has made tailor-made precision its signature. This is Maison Soutiran. An artisanal estate born and raised in Ambonnay. A small village that lovers of fine bubbles consider a true sacred temple. The secret of this territory lies in a soil that is unique in the world. Beneath the feet of the winegrowers stretch metres of pure chalk, accumulated over millions of years. This special subsoil behaves like a natural sponge, absorbing the warmth of the day and regulating water for the roots. Ambonnay is historically famous for the power of its vineyards. Yet Soutiran’s mastery lies precisely in transforming this innate vigour into pure harmony. The Premier Cru designation certifies that the grapes come only from the region’s most suitable villages. Cuvée Alexandre embodies this protected excellence through an assemblage studied down to the finest detail. Forty percent Chardonnay brings light and verticality, another forty percent Pinot Noir provides structure, while the remaining twenty percent is Pinot Meunier, bringing a pleasant fruity and rounded note. The grapes are harvested strictly by hand, while pressing is carried out gently to extract only the best must. The following fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. The Maison also chooses to carry out full malolactic fermentation, reducing sharp acidity and giving an enveloping softness. The addition of an important proportion of reserve wines finally gives depth to the cuvée. Ageing on the lees lasts from three to six years. This is a period well above the minimum requirements of the appellation. The perlage is extremely fine and continuous, creating a dense and creamy mousse. On the nose, the intensity is surprising and constantly changing. Nuances of candied lemon and white peach emerge, together with notes of ripe pear and marzipan. Shortly afterwards come aromas of warm brioche and toasted almond. On the palate, the sip reveals itself to be harmonious and soft yet straight. The freshness is lively and supports a rich, juicy body. The finish cleanses the palate with a typical persistent chalky savouriness. Already delicious today, this is a Champagne that does not fear the years. Its important structure and pronounced acidity guarantee ageing potential of at least five to seven years in the cellar. Over time, the profile evolves towards even warmer and more complex tertiary notes.
Ambonnay, a small village set on the southern slope of the celebrated Montagne de Reims, is a magical place for Champagne lovers. Here, every single hectare of vineyard proudly bears the prestigious Grand Cru classification, and Maison Soutiran has been writing, for three generations, a story made of craftsmanship, rigour and a deep connection to its roots. Founded in 1970 by Alain Soutiran, the estate is now run with passion and a modern vision by his daughter Valérie Renaux together with her husband Patrick, who proudly describe themselves as “artisans of vine and wine”. The secret of the Maison lies first and foremost in the geological particularities of Ambonnay. The estate’s vineyards sink their roots into truly unique chalky soils, exceptionally rich in magnesium. This specific imprint of the soil gives the grapes not only extraordinary energy, but also an unmistakable minerality, which in the glass translates into almost saline and iodine-like nuances. In this sun-kissed terroir, Pinot Noir finds its natural home, producing powerful, structured wines rich in shades of small red berries, while Chardonnay contributes that touch of sharp elegance and citrus freshness that completes the balance. The Maison also deliberately chooses to let its cuvées rest on the lees in the cellar for a period ranging from 5 to 8 years. A brave and patient choice, essential to soften the edges of Pinot Noir and allow the complex structure of the wine to blend perfectly with the evolved notes of pastry and brioche.
