If Barolo is the king of Italian wines, the Mosconi cru from Monforte d'Alba represents its most austere and fascinating throne. It comes from a single vineyard, a label capable of offering a sip of rare complexity and depth. The Mosconi vineyard is located between 360 and 400 metres above sea level, a beautiful height that favours temperature variations, which are fundamental for the quality and aromatic complexity of the grapes. But the real secret here is the soil: a white, tufaceous terrain that helps develop an important yet extremely fine tannic structure in Nebbiolo – the only grape used – capable of ageing beautifully. Prunotto works with Nebbiolo using an approach that balances tradition and precision. The grapes, harvested manually, arrive at the winery to be crushed and macerated in contact with the skins for about seven days at a controlled temperature. This short but intense maceration is designed to extract the best in terms of colour and polyphenols. The real magic, however, happens afterwards. The wine is aged for at least 18 months in large 50-hectolitre oak barrels. This “traditional” ageing method softens and integrates the tannins, while maintaining the aromatic purity of the fruit and terroir. The result is a wine that speaks for itself, without unnecessary frills: austere, elegant, well-structured and with considerable potential for ageing. Intense and vibrant garnet red in colour, the nose is charming and precise: not the usual explosion of fruit, but a complex bouquet dominated by balsamic and almost wild notes. Hints of sage, rosemary and undergrowth combine with touches of sweet spices and classic aromas of rose and violet. On the palate, it is broad and generous, with an excellent structure that fills the mouth. The tannins are prominent but fine and integrated, with an almost silky texture, supported by a vibrant freshness that gives length and momentum. The palate closes with a long and persistent, almost savoury finish that immediately invites the next sip. This Barolo is built to last. Its great balance and important tannic structure allow it to age for 10-15 years without any problems, making it an excellent investment for the cellar. When we decide to uncork it, we will discover an ideal partner for rich and structured dishes, those that honour the Piedmontese tradition.
In 1904, in the council chamber of the municipality of Serralunga, in the presence of Notary Giacomo Oddero and the young witness Alfredo Prunotto, the Cantina Sociale ‘Ai Vini delle Langhe’ was founded. Among those participating in the founding act were figures who left their mark on the history of Alba and the municipalities of the Langhe, as well as many small local producers. A few years later, in 1922, the winery began to experience serious financial problems and was put into liquidation. It was purchased by the young Alfredo Prunotto, who had recently married his Luigina. Within a few years, thanks to the passion of the two young people, the winery soon became famous and began exporting Barolo and Barbaresco all over the world. In 1972, Ugo della Piana, an architect from the Langhe region, designed the new winery, which was built near Alba, where the company's headquarters are still located today. The latest chapter in Prunotto's history dates back to 1989, when the Antinori family began its collaboration with the company, initially handling distribution and then, in 1994, with the retirement of the Colla brothers, also production. Today, the estate covers approximately 65 hectares, with vineyards in the best wine-growing areas of the region, from the Langhe to Monferrato.
