The back label of this transparent wine reminds us that Favorita is a local name for the Vermentino grape that was brought north from the coast of Liguria via the "strada del sale" to the region of Piedmont. Although Vermentino may share similar genetics, Favorita is, for most practical purposes, considered its own distinct variety. The Gianni Gagliardo 2019 Langhe Favorita Fallegro was not a perfect sample in my tasting, firstly because the bouquet showed some mild reduction and secondly because there is just a touch of effervescence that makes me wonder if the fermentation process finished smoothly. Beyond those issues, the wine offers citrus, stone fruit and almond.

Fresh and bright white with lemon and melon character. Medium body. Crisp finish. Drink now.

    Fallegro Langhe DOC Favorita 2021
  • We are accustomed to thinking of Vermentino as a grape variety that loves heat and proximity to the sea. But few people know that in Piedmont, far from the coasts and in a decidedly more continental climate, a grape variety is grown, Favorita, which is considered the Piedmont version of Vermentino. Together with the original Vermentino, Favorita grapes give life to fresh and fragrant wines, ideal as an aperitif but also perfect for serving at the table. Fallegro is one of the first Favorita wines originating in Piedmont. It is produced by Poderi Gianni Gagliardo. A careful process that starts with a rigorous selection in the vineyard. Each particle is vinified separately, and is assembled with the others only at the end of the processing. This is followed by about four months of refinement in steel and then bottling. The result is a wine with a strongly mineral character, with citrus, fruity and floral notes. In the mouth it is lively and incredibly pleasant.

The origin of the Cantina Poderi Gianni Gagliardo dates back to 1847, even if the first bottles marketed under the company brand date back to the first half of the 1970s. Today, Poderi Gianni Gagliardo represents a solid reality of Barolo, with 10 plots, divided into five different municipalities. Wines are produced here that can boast the Additional Geographical Mentions (MGAs) Lazzarito, with the "Preve" vineyard, Castelletto, Monvigliero, Mosconi, Fossati, Bricco San Pietro, Santa Maria, as well as the original Serra dei Turchi, where it all began. Mythical names for any good Barolo enthusiast who can appreciate the subtle differences that each terroir gives to the wines. Finally, the modern winery is located in the town of La Morra.
