The Gianni Gagliardo 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo Da Batiè opens to a pretty ruby color and a lean appearance. The bouquet is a bit raw or wild, and this makes some sense given the youth of the wine and its emphasis on primary fruit. There is wild fruit, raspberry and some crushed limestone on the simple, easy close. There is a note of scorched earth or burnt ember buried within.
A touch of earthiness in the aroma marks this otherwise rich, round style of Nebbiolo. The telltale tannins are there, offset by cherry, strawberry, floral and spice notes. Moderate length. Drink now through 2024.
A wine region is great when its base wines are also great products. In Piedmont, for example, Nebbiolo doesn't have to be a Barolo or Barbaresco to be extremely enjoyable. An example? This Langhe Nebbiolo proposed by Poderi Gianni Gagliardo. A simple but particularly pleasant wine. It is the result of careful processing in the cellar and the fruit of about a year's refinement in steel (followed by a few months in the bottle). The result is an immediate and vertical wine. A wine that knows how to make a good impression on the table, with the right pairing (of course). If the view is appreciated for the beautiful, not too deep, ruby red colour, the nose is amazed by the richness of its aromas ranging from mineral notes of graphite, red fruits to spices. In the mouth it is elegant and harmonious. Pleasantly fresh and mineral, it is a wine that is unlikely to be left over at the end of a dinner with friends.
The origin of the Cantina Poderi Gianni Gagliardo dates back to 1847, even if the first bottles marketed under the company brand date back to the first half of the 1970s. Today, Poderi Gianni Gagliardo represents a solid reality of Barolo, with 10 plots, divided into five different municipalities. Wines are produced here that can boast the Additional Geographical Mentions (MGAs) Lazzarito, with the "Preve" vineyard, Castelletto, Monvigliero, Mosconi, Fossati, Bricco San Pietro, Santa Maria, as well as the original Serra dei Turchi, where it all began. Mythical names for any good Barolo enthusiast who can appreciate the subtle differences that each terroir gives to the wines. Finally, the modern winery is located in the town of La Morra.
