Nittardi, 53011 Castellina in Chianti (Si), Italia
It is called Ad Astra, Maremma Toscana DOC, and is produced by Nittardi. A beautiful, structured red wine, the result of a skilful blend of grape varieties cultivated on a unique territory. The heart of this wine is 45% Sangiovese, which gives structure and character to the finished blend. This is backed up by 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, which adds elegance and complexity, 15% Merlot for softness and body, 10% Syrah for an intriguing spicy note, and finally 5% of typical local varieties that give an authentic and unique touch. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, preserving the freshness and purity of the primary flavours. Subsequently, the wine matures for 12 months in French oak tonneaux and barriques, acquiring complexity and softness, before being further refined in the bottle to complete its ageing process. The result is a deep ruby red wine that reveals a suggestive bouquet of ripe red fruit and plums on the nose, with delicate notes of liquorice adding depth and intriguing complexity. In the mouth it is full and structured, with soft, well-integrated tannins that give a pleasant rounded sensation. Its balanced acidity and length make it an ideal companion for convivial moments.
A renowned winery in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, Cantina Nittardi stands on the enchanting hills on the border between the provinces of Florence and Siena. Its history is rooted in the distant 11th century, when the estate began its existence as a modest defence tower, known by the evocative name of "Nectar Dei". However, fate shaped the destiny of this estate in an extraordinary way in the 16th century, when the famous Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti became its owner. Legend has it that in 1549, while in Rome to paint the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo asked his nephew Lionardo to send bottles of Nittardi wine to Pope Julius II as a sign of respect and homage. From that moment on, art and wine have been intertwined in an unbreakable partnership for Nittardi. Every year, an internationally renowned artist is engaged to create two original works: one to decorate the label of Nittardi's prestigious Chianti Classico Casanuova and the other for the silk paper that gracefully wraps each bottle.
