Champagne Jacques Chaput - 1 rue Blanche 10200 Arrentières – Francia
There is an area of Champagne where the artisan and farming spirit still lives on, producing sparkling wines of extraordinary richness. We are in Arrentières, a small village in the Côte des Bar, the southernmost subregion of Champagne. Historically overlooked by the great maisons of Reims, this land is now experiencing a true revival thanks to independent winegrowers who work with their hands in the soil. The climate here is influenced by continental conditions, while the soils are dominated by limestone marl similar to that found in neighbouring Burgundy. The Jacques Chaput family has cultivated these vineyards for generations, combining respect for nature with a modern vision. For this cuvée, the house uses a blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay. The former provides a powerful structure and enveloping aromas of red fruit. The latter adds the essential freshness needed to balance the palate. The grapes are harvested by hand, with the finest bunches selected directly in the vineyard. In the cellar, gentle pressing is used to extract only the finest juice. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve the purity of the fruit. A key stage is the complete malolactic fermentation, which softens the sharper acidity and gives the wine remarkable roundness on the palate. Finally, after tirage, the bottles rest on their lees for between 24 and 30 months. The result? Warmth and dynamism. Bright gold in colour, crossed by a fine and decidedly creamy stream of bubbles, it reveals clear aromas of ripe apricot, mirabelle plum and yellow fruit, followed by toasted nuances reminiscent of brioche and artisan pastries. The palate is striking for its substantial structure and pronounced vinous character. Vibrant citrus freshness gives the sip momentum, balancing notes of peach, small red berries and lemon peel. The finish is persistent, clean and pleasantly fruity. It works beautifully with fried fish, as its lively acidity cleanses the palate of the richness of the frying. It is also perfect with mushroom risotto or delicate white meats, such as duck breast à l’orange, which echoes the wine’s citrus notes.
The history of Maison Jacques Chaput stretches far back to 1736, when “Juste” Chaput cultivated his first vines in Fravaux. Since then, for eight generations, the family has always included at least one winegrower, keeping alive a deep-rooted bond with the land and wine. The modern turning point came in the 1950s thanks to Jacques Chaput, who decided to invest in reviving the vineyards of Arrentières, a small and picturesque village where Benedictine monks had already recognised extraordinary potential as early as the twelfth century. Jacques embraced that centuries-old heritage and transformed it into an estate of excellence, now led by his son Jacky and his grandson Jason. A genuinely family-run business, capable of combining the experience of the past with the energy and vision of the future. We are in the Côte des Bar, the southernmost area of Champagne, on the right bank of the River Aube. It is a fascinating territory, quite different from the rest of the region, characterised by a mosaic of landscapes alternating between deep plains and steep hills. The soil here is mainly composed of marl, limestone and clay dating back to the Kimmeridgian period, giving it a unique geological signature. It is precisely this “puzzle” of soils and microclimates that gives the grapes their unmistakable freshness and vitality. Today, the estate has 14 hectares of vineyards, where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the undisputed protagonists.
