Château Moulin Caresse, 1235 Rte de Couin, 24230 Saint-Antoine-de-Breuilh, Francia
In the heart of the Montravel region, in the south-west of France, Château Moulin Caresse produces Haut-Montravel Moelleux ‘Cent Pour 100’, a sweet wine that is the result of a skilful combination of traditional grape varieties and winemaking methods that respect local traditions. Located in the north-west of the Bergerac region, the Montravel appellation covers about 350 hectares of hilly vineyards in 14 communes between Port-Sainte-Foy and Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne, on the right bank of the Dordogne. The soils are mainly calcareous with layers of red clay, offering ideal conditions for the cultivation of white varieties. Haut-Montravel Moelleux ‘Cent Pour 100’ is made from a balanced blend of 34% Muscadelle, 33% Sémillon and 33% Sauvignon Blanc. The vinification process begins with a pre-fermentation maceration to extract the best aromas from the skins. This is followed by slow pressing and a 24-hour decantation to clarify the must. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, mainly new, using indigenous yeasts. After fermentation, the wine matures on the fine lees for 10 months, during which time the lees are periodically stirred (bâtonnage) to enrich the complexity and structure of the wine. Cent Pour 100 offers an aromatic bouquet rich in notes of candied fruit, honey and floral touches. In the mouth it is pleasantly balanced, with a harmonious sweetness sustained by a fresh acidity that prolongs the pleasure of tasting it. Try it on its own, as a ‘meditation wine’ at the end of a meal, or with blue cheeses, where the sweetness of the wine balances the savouriness of the cheese. For a daring combination, you can also try it with dark chocolate, where the fruity and honeyed notes of the wine contrast pleasantly with the bitterness of the chocolate.
In the region of Montravel, in the picturesque village of Saint-Antoine-de-Breuilh, stands Château Moulin Caresse, a family-run winery with a centuries-old history. Since 1749, the same family has handed down the ownership of this estate, which proudly dominates the Dordogne valley, just 20 km east of Saint-Émilion, at the gateway to the Périgord. Covering an area of 42 hectares, the vineyards of Château Moulin Caresse extend over clay-limestone soils, ideal for the cultivation of the classic varieties of the Bergerac region: Sémillon, Sauvignon, Muscadelle, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The mild climate of the area, influenced by the proximity of the Dordogne river, guarantees optimal ripening of the grapes, allowing the production of highly drinkable wines with an excellent quality/price ratio. Annual production is around 350,000 bottles, a number that testifies to the family's commitment and passion for viticulture. The care and attention dedicated to each phase of the production process, from the vineyard to the cellar, is reflected in the quality of the wines, which best express the characteristics of the Montravel terroir. The privileged position of Château Moulin Caresse, between Bordeaux and the Périgord, gives its wines a unique character, combining the elegance of Bordeaux wines with the richness and generosity of South-West wines.
