  • BERSANO S.r.l. - Nizza Monferrato

"La Prata" Pinot Noir DOC 2017
  • A wine characterised by beautiful longevity, this La Prata, Piedmont DOC, goes a little outside the box. For once, in fact, Bersano abandons the traditional grape varieties of the area to marry an elegant international, Pinot Noir, which certainly does not struggle to acclimatise even on the green hills of Monferrato. After all, it is one of the most prized black grape varieties in the world, from which wines of great value and charm are born. Very demanding in terms of cultivation, it finds in Cascina Prata di Bersano the calcareous soils it prefers, together with a relatively cold microclimate with a good temperature range. Ideal conditions, therefore, for producing a great wine. In Bersano, in particular, the wine is matured in French oak tonneaux, which contributes to its complexity and pleasantness. Ruby red in colour, the nose is pleasantly rich and intense, with hints of small red fruits, cherries and blackberries. Then finely vanilla and spicy notes. In the mouth, however, it is harmonious and well-balanced, with a good structure and excellent persistence. Perfect with savoury earthy dishes, it is the red to uncork especially if the menu includes mushrooms and game.

More than a century has passed since the foundation of the Bersano company. The precise date is 1907, as proudly recalled on the home page of the company website. We are in Nizza Monferrato, the heart of the Barbera d'Asti district. The real turning point, however, came only a few years later, in 1935, when Arturo Bersano, a rare man in terms of intelligence and culture, a lawyer by family pride and a vine grower by passion, took control of the Cantina, which until then had been a family-run business and sold its wines only regionally. His work was inspired by the motto 'if you want to drink well, buy a vineyard'. A philosophy that, like a true pioneer, he would follow for the rest of his life. So over time, Bersano and, after him, the Massimelli and Soave families, owners of the Casa Vinicola, consolidated an impressive farmstead. Here, without forgetting the strength of tradition, quality grapes are still produced from which typical wines of the region are made. Particular attention has always been paid to the wood for ageing, the company's true asset. Cantine Bersano, in fact, keep large oak casks and tonneaux where, thanks to the constant temperature and humidity, the wines mature slowly for years. Today Bersano is considered one of the most important wineries in Piedmont.
