Barolo Bussia DOCG "Bricco Visette" 2018 - Attilio Ghisolfi

Barolo Bussia is an appellation that immediately attracts the attention of many Langhe and Nebbiolo enthusiasts. Bussia, in fact, is almost synonymous with high quality Barolo. Unique bottles of their kind, capable of giving strong emotions. In this case Attilio Ghisolfi proposes it with grapes from Bricco Visette. "Nome omen", since Visette derives from the dialectal expression "vis" and means small vines. Obtained from pure Nebbiolo grapes (of course), the starting vineyards have an average age between 20 and 40 years. We are located at about 350 metres above sea level, with good exposure to the south, south-west. After harvesting, the grapes are taken to the cellar to be processed within a few hours. Maceration on the skins for about 20 days is followed by alcoholic fermentation, in this case spontaneously triggered with indigenous yeasts. After racking, 70% of the wine rests in 25 and 45 hectolitre oak casks, while the remainder is put into tonneaux and barriques. Maturation in wood lasts about 30 months, followed by at least another 6 months in the bottle. Dark garnet red in colour, the nose is elegant, intense and spicy, with notes of red fruits such as raspberries, currants and pomegranate. In the mouth it is particularly rich and well balanced, with an interesting tannic structure. It is a classic red wine of the Langhe tradition that goes well with roasted red meat, game, truffled foods and mature cheeses.

Passionate winemakers for 4 generations. On Attilio Ghisolfi's website you are greeted by this welcome. A point of honour for the talented winemaker from Monforte d'Alba that is rightly highlighted from the start. As in every story of companies with a long family tradition, also for the Ghisolfi family there is a fundamental moment. A turning point. In this case it is 1988. Until then, in fact, the company had always been a "mixed economy", that is, based on the production of fruit and wine grapes, where bottled wine represented only a marginal part. When Gianmarco joined the company, however, everything changed. The first historic label, Attilio Ghisolfi, was born and gradually all the wines produced began to be sold in bottles. At the same time, the orchards were converted to vineyards and new land was acquired that was particularly suited to the cultivation of Nebbiolo. The objectives are ambitious and everyone in the company is working to achieve them. And the goals are not yet over. New challenges, new labels and new wines will certainly be proposed in the coming years.

This is very structured with lots of chewy, powerful tannins that frame the extremely attractive black-cherry and strawberry character. Extremely structured and muscular. This needs time to soften. Try after 2025, to allow the slightly austere tannins to soften.

  • Wine Enthusiast 94

Eucalyptus, scorched earth, pressed rose and sandalwood aromas slowly take shape in the glass. Firmly structured and elegant, the palate is still youthfully austere, offering dried cherry, blood orange, licorice and spice framed in tightly wound, close-grained tannins. Drink 2027–2032.
