The most precious jewel of the Tasca d'Almerita house is this "Diamante", produced with grapes from the Regaleali estate. You don't wear it but you drink it, of course. But the satisfaction it gives us is absolutely comparable (at least for us wine lovers). It is a passito made not only from Moscato grapes, as is traditional on the island, but from a skilful blend of Moscato and Gewürztraminer grapes, not exactly a native Sicilian variety but which, in recent years, has slowly been gaining a place of honor in Mediterranean vine types. Obviously it needs to be grown in the coolest corners of the island, in vineyards up to 900 metres above sea level, where the heat of the spring and especially summer sun is mitigated by a certain coolness at night. And it is precisely this magical mix of conditions that allows the grapes to reach their full maturity of aromas and flavours. After the harvest, the healthiest and most beautiful bunches are left to dehydrate in the shade. This is followed by vinification in stainless steel and aging for almost a year in inert containers and in the bottle. The colour is golden yellow. The nose is of white flowers, citrus peel, candied fruit, tropical fruit and lots and lots of acacia honey. In the mouth it is sweet but balanced. Long and pleasantly fresh, it seems to never want to end.
Eight generations. Over 200 years of wine history in Sicily. What more could anyone want? Perhaps only the ownership of one of the most famous estates on the island, Regaleali, from which many of the company's best-known wines come. We are obviously talking about Tasca d'Almerita, rightly considered one of the most interesting realities of our country. The challenge of the 2000s for the last heirs of the dynasty is to achieve environmental sustainability on the company's vast estates. Estates that can be found in practically every corner of Sicily. Alongside the historic Regaleali estate in Sclafani, Palermo, Tasca now also works vineyards in Salina, the land of Malvasia, on the island of Mothia, where Marsala was born and where small plots of Grillo grapes can still be found today, in Camporeale and even on the northern slope of Etna, where native vines dominate and are cultivated at altitude in terraced vineyards.
