Prunotto's Barbaresco DOCG Bric Turot is not just a great Piedmontese wine. It is a real piece of history enclosed in a bottle. The name itself, Bric Turot, means ‘little hill’ in the local dialect and refers to a small, prominent plot of about 5 hectares, which has always been considered a historic cru of the winery. We are in the heart of the Langhe, an area that UNESCO has recognised as a World Heritage Site, and with good reason. Here, the continental climate, with hot summers mitigated by significant temperature variations during the ripening phase, gives the grapes a unique aromatic concentration and vibrant freshness. The key, however, is the soil: the famous Tortonian marls, rich in limestone and compact clay, which translate into Barbareschi wines of great elegance and complexity, known for their velvety texture even when young. 100% Nebbiolo, this grape variety is capricious and noble. Its skin, rich in colour and, above all, tannins and acidity, is the basis for the wine's extraordinary longevity and imposing structure. Once in the cellar, the grapes are destemmed and crushed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats with maceration on the skins for about 10 days at a controlled temperature, for optimal but delicate extraction. After malolactic fermentation is completed before winter, the wine matures for at least 12 months in oak barrels of various sizes. This carefully calibrated choice, combining large and small wood, helps to tame the tannins of Nebbiolo and enrich its texture without covering its precious varietal aromas. Finally, a year of rest in the bottle is the finishing touch before release onto the market. Intense garnet red in colour with bright ruby reflections, the nose is opulent and complex. It immediately releases intense floral notes of violet and rose, balanced by hints of small red fruits such as raspberry and blackberry. As it opens up, spicy touches emerge, a hint of liquorice, cinnamon and a balsamic finish of mint and tobacco. The taste is enveloping and muscular. In the mouth, it is full-bodied and harmonious, with a well-defined but never aggressive structure. The tannic texture is dense and velvety, not “pungent”, leaving a full sensation and a long, persistent aftertaste of ripe fruit. A true Barbaresco that does not leave you thirsty. Bric Turot is not afraid of time: it is a wine with great ageing potential, which can rest quietly in the cellar for 10 to 15 years, or even longer in exceptional vintages. In any case, a red of this calibre calls for important dishes, such as roast beef, tagliolini with white truffles or mature cheeses.
In 1904, in the council chamber of the municipality of Serralunga, in the presence of Notary Giacomo Oddero and the young witness Alfredo Prunotto, the Cantina Sociale ‘Ai Vini delle Langhe’ was founded. Among those present at the founding ceremony were figures who left their mark on the history of Alba and the municipalities of the Langhe, as well as many small local producers. A few years later, in 1922, the winery began to experience serious financial problems and was put into liquidation. It was purchased by the young Alfredo Prunotto, who had recently married his Luigina. Within a few years, thanks to the passion of the two young people, the winery soon became famous and began exporting Barolo and Barbaresco all over the world. In 1972, Ugo della Piana, an architect from the Langhe region, designed the new winery, which was built near Alba, where the company's headquarters are still located today. The latest chapter in Prunotto's history dates back to 1989, when the Antinori family began its collaboration with the company, initially handling distribution and then, in 1994, with the retirement of the Colla brothers, also production. Today, the estate covers approximately 65 hectares, with vineyards in the best wine-growing areas of the region, from the Langhe to Monferrato.
