This is one of two new wines to join the Gianni Gagliardo portfolio with this vintage. The 2016 Barolo del Comune di La Morra draws its fruit from various vineyards in the Santa Maria subzone and from the Serra dei Turchi vineyard that is closest to the winery headquarters. With a small production of 4,260 bottles, the wine is soft and lush with generous doses of Nebbiolo fruit and oak spice. The tight and linear tannins should guide the wine forward in time.
The sweet core of strawberries and flowers really comes through here. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and very fine-textured with hazelnuts and dried flowers at the finish. Very fine and high-toned. Drink after 2023.
The shy nose eventually reveals oak-driven sensations, hazelnut and underbrush along with a whiff of pine resin. The firm palate starts off with sour cherry, cranberry and star anise before assertive, grainy tannins rear up, creating an extremely astringent, mouthdrying close that truncates the finish. The Barolo wines produced in the area of La Morra, such as this one proposed by Poderi Gianni Gagliardo, have the characteristic of maturing very early and therefore already being extremely pleasant a few years after the harvest. Wines that, despite being so immediate, do not lack elegance and complexity. The grapes come from vineyards that fall within the Geographical Mentions of Santa Maria and Serra dei Turchi. Maceration for 12 days at a controlled temperature and malolactic fermentation carried out entirely, are the basic ingredients of the wine-making process. This is followed by a period of refinement in large oak barrels for 30 months. The result is a particularly pleasant wine. Ruby red with garnet hues, the nose reveals notes of flowers, especially violets. There are also notes of sweet spices and roasting, well integrated with the other scents that gradually emerge from the glass as the minutes pass. In the mouth it is balanced, intense and pleasantly tannic. The ending is also long and pleasant.
The origin of the Cantina Poderi Gianni Gagliardo dates back to 1847, even if the first bottles marketed under the company brand date back to the first half of the 1970s. Today, Poderi Gianni Gagliardo represents a solid reality of Barolo, with 10 plots, divided into five different municipalities. Wines are produced here that can boast the Additional Geographical Mentions (MGAs) Lazzarito, with the "Preve" vineyard, Castelletto, Monvigliero, Mosconi, Fossati, Bricco San Pietro, Santa Maria, as well as the original Serra dei Turchi, where it all began. Mythical names for any good Barolo enthusiast who can appreciate the subtle differences that each terroir gives to the wines. Finally, the modern winery is located in the town of La Morra.
