Champagne Parmantier-Rigaut - 5 Rue de la Petite Fontaine, 51500 Chamery (Francia)
Champagne Cuvée Brut Tradition by Parmantier-Rigaut is designed to be a great wine to share with friends and family. A little gem created to remind us that French excellence can be incredibly warm and convivial. It is produced in Chamery, a charming village classified as Premier Cru and nestled in the celebrated Montagne de Reims. This area has historically been the undisputed kingdom of black grape varieties, thanks to its chalky soils and unique continental microclimate, capable of giving the grapes enviable structure and remarkable natural freshness. In this corner of Champagne, the hills expose the vines to the morning sun while also protecting them from the most intense frosts of northern France. Parmantier-Rigaut interprets the AOC Champagne in the most classic way. The backbone of this bottle is in fact made up of as much as 80% Pinot Meunier, a grape variety often considered a supporting player, but which here takes centre stage, bringing delicious fruit and irresistible immediacy. The remaining 20% is entrusted to Pinot Noir, which contributes complexity, character and that structural finesse that is essential to give depth to each sip. In the cellar, every step is designed to preserve the purity of the fruit. Vinification takes place mainly in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to keep the varietal aromas intact. This is followed by the second fermentation in the bottle, during which the wine rests on the lees in the cool cellar galleries for around 3 years before disgorgement. To maintain perfect stylistic continuity year after year, the maison skilfully integrates a proportion of reserve wines. In the glass, it shows a fine, dense and decidedly persistent perlage. On the nose, the attack is fresh and tempting, led by crisp notes of yellow peach, mirabelle plum, pear and citrus fruit, which then give way to sweet hints of brioche and honey. On the palate, the texture is soft yet enlivened by beautiful dynamism. Ripe fruit fills the mouth before flowing into a citrusy and pleasantly fresh finish.
If there is one thing the world of Champagne has taught us, it is that behind great bubbles there are not only the prestigious frescoed salons of the great historic maisons. There is a parallel universe, vibrant and incredibly fascinating, made up of small independent winegrowers, deeply connected to their land, who work far from the spotlight to create true gems. Champagne Parmantier-Rigaut is the perfect portrait of this philosophy: a small family-run estate where know-how is passed down from generation to generation and every bottle tells the sincere story of the terroir it comes from. We are in the Petite Montagne de Reims, more precisely between the picturesque villages of Chamery and Ecueil. If these names do not mean much to you, it is enough to know that these villages are entirely classified as Premier Cru, a calling card that, in the language of Champagne, is synonymous with excellence and exceptional terroir. Here, the vines sink their roots into a magical soil: a mix of clay and sand on the surface, which gives warmth and roundness to the grapes, and deep chalk in the subsoil, the true secret that gives the wines that vibrant freshness and minerality we so love to find in the glass. Dominating the estate’s vineyards, covering as much as 50% of the surface area, is Pinot Meunier, a grape variety often considered “minor” by the big names, but which here, thanks to the characteristics of the soil, expresses an irresistible personality made of fruity aromas, softness and immediate drinkability. The remaining area is divided equally between the structure of Pinot Noir and the sharp elegance of Chardonnay.
