Monserrato 1973. Contrada La Francesca 82100 Benevento
With its beautiful modern label, it is difficult for this Fiano to go unnoticed. But nice surprises are not limited to the outward appearance. Here, in fact, the winery's technicians use only grapes from the estate's highest plots, where the vines express the highest quality every year. After harvesting by hand in small crates, the grapes are brought to the winery to begin processing with the classic soft pressing of whole clusters. The must is transferred to stainless steel tanks where alcoholic fermentation is started. At the end of this stage the wine ages on its fine lees in stainless steel tanks for 9 months. It is then bottled before the summer following the harvest. Bright yellow with green highlights, the nose with aging reveals hints of sage, borage, oregano and pyro powder. When young, however, it has all the nuances of white fruit and ripe citrus. In the mouth, then, it has depth, length and an excellent balance between freshness and alcohol. A perfect wine right from the aperitif, it goes well with fish dishes. Also good with white meats and vegetarian dishes.
The Monserrato winery was born in 1973 from an intuition of Cavalier Francesco Zecchina, a Neapolitan builder and wine enthusiast. It was precisely his passion that convinced him to invest in an area of his Campania particularly suited for quality viticulture, buying land in the hills around Benevento, at the foot of Monte Serrato. Here he fixed up a ruin dating from the 1962 Irpinia earthquake and, with the help of a young friend and farmer, began planting vines, tobacco and olive trees. After a period of transition, the farm is now run by Francesco's daughter Paola and his son Lucio. Currently, three oil labels and a line of six local wines are produced from the farm's olive groves and vineyards.
