    "Peppone" Umbria Rosso IGP 2022
  • Peppone, nickname of Adolfo Leoni, is one of the protagonists of the Feudi Spada winery. Peppone, the Boss, if he is not in the vineyard, is in the cellar experimenting and refining his wine. What matters most to us, however, is that Peppone is above all a fine international red. Umbria Rosso IGT, comes from the processing of Granache grapes, 85%, and Syrah for the remainder. It is the wine that most represents the Spada family. An explosion of fresh fruit blended with sweet spices and white pepper. The harvest, which is obviously manual, allows only the best bunches to be selected from plants with an average age of around 20 years. Once in the cellar, the grapes are processed at a low temperature. The Grenache in steel with periodic pumping over. In wood, with periodic punching-down, the Syrah. At the end of processing, after racking, the Grenache grape wine is left to age for about six months on the lees. The Syrah, on the other hand, simply rests in oak barrels for no less than four months. This is followed by blending and bottling. At that point, the wine rests at least another month in the cellar before being put on the market. A rich and complex red, this Peppone is certainly not content with a delicate combination. It needs substance to do it justice. Meat, above all, even game. Excellent, however, also with a sliver of a good mature cheese. Pure pleasure. 

    It was in 1669 when, returning from a trip to France, Orazio Spada brought back some Grenache vine shoots from which he succeeded in producing an exquisite wine, the so-called 'Chianti di Viceno'. Preserved and handed down from father to son for almost 400 years, even today those vines are still kept on the vine and represent one of Feudi Spada's most precious treasures. To those original vines have been added others of Syrah, Rhine Riesling and Alicante. We are in the heart of Umbria where, thanks to the meeting of two friends, Alessandro and Maurizio, a new adventure began in 2010, aimed at recovering and enhancing the value of old plots of land. Starting with historical plantings of over 90 years old, recovered and grafted by grafting scions from mother plants. Today Feudi Spada is a beautiful, modern and up-to-date reality. No insecticides, anti-botritics, weed killers or chemical fertilisers are used in the vineyard. In general, treatments in the vineyard are reduced to the bare minimum, through maniacal attention to the weather and the health of the vines. An onerous commitment that is, however, amply repaid when one has the opportunity to taste one of the good products of the beautiful Viceno winery.
