A white wine that is not only fresh and crisp, but also envelops us with its natural warmth. We are talking about Chaume-Arnaud's Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc, a wine that embodies the sunniest and most generous side of the Rhône Valley. It is produced in the heart of Drôme Provençale, in Vinsobres, where the soil is a mosaic of clay and limestone, perfect for enhancing the qualities of white grapes. Here, Chaume-Arnaud's certified organic production philosophy focuses on total respect for the environment, from the vineyard to the glass. The clean air and Mistral breezes, purified by the surrounding mountains, keep the grapes healthy and concentrated, helping to create a bouquet of intense and complex aromas. It is made from a fortunate trio of white grapes, with Marsanne as the backbone. Alongside it are Viognier and Roussanne, which has the task of balancing everything with its discreet freshness. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled steel or concrete tanks and, at the end of the transformation, the wine undergoes a brief ageing on the lees, which gives it its typical softness without altering the purity of the fruit. Bright straw yellow in colour, bringing the glass to the nose reveals captivating aromas of juicy fruit: notes of peach and apricot in the foreground, with a counterpoint of aromatic herbs and a floral finesse that makes the bouquet complex and inviting. It surprises on the palate with its roundness. It is a warm and enveloping wine, balanced by a lively acidity that contributes to its long finish. Pair with baked fish dishes, such as salmon or sea bream, or with white meats, such as chicken or pork.
Chaume Arnaud is one of those places that makes you fall in love with wine before you even taste it. We are in Vinsobres, a small village that, before becoming synonymous with great wines, was covered with olive trees. Its wine-making history underwent a dramatic and decisive change on a freezing night in 1956, when a polar cold snap destroyed almost all of the olive groves. The farmers, not wanting to leave the land uncultivated, began planting vines, thus transforming the landscape and giving life to what would become, in 2006, the first AOC of Drôme Provençale. This is an example of how something extraordinary can arise from an adverse event. Chaume Arnaud, now run by Philippe and Valérie, is not simply an “organic” winery but goes further, towards the principles of biodynamics. The vineyard extends over a plateau with clayey-calcareous soils rich in pebbles and benefits from a Mediterranean climate mitigated by the influence of two winds: the Mistral, which ventilates and keeps the grapes healthy, and the Pontias, a night breeze that slows down ripening, preserving the acidity and freshness of the wines. This combination of hot summer sun and cool nights allows the grape varieties of the southern Rhône – Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre in particular – to express themselves at their best, giving the wines an almost unexpected elegance.
